CMU has this site <a href="http://www.cmu.edu/computing/documentation/buy-computer/buy-computer.html#pcmac%5B/url%5D">http://www.cmu.edu/computing/documentation/buy-computer/buy-computer.html#pcmac</a> with requirements for computers. It's clear though that departments may have different standards. I'm going into electrical and computer engineering. Does anyone know where I can find the computer recommendations for CIT if they vary from the overall recommendations?

I'm thinking of getting a Dell Inspiron e1505 with 1.86GHz, XP Pro, 1GB Memory, 60GB harddrive, Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem, 24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive, and Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini Card (54Mbps). Should this be good enough?

The way I see it, buy whatever computer meets YOUR needs/requirements. I don't think you would ever need to run something that you couldn't run on any computer you bought in the past 2 years or so, but just in case, they have clusters where you can do that. Most likely with the software already on it. If you have a decent computer, you could just keep it until it dies. I have many friends who are still using 4 year old computers. Just because they keep getting faster, it doesn't mean you need/will be able to use the extra speed.

I KNOW the architecture reqs are higher than that, as i've stated elsewhere, so it may be different for your dept too.

Turns out that I called someone in the department and they said that will be fine.

I'm not positive, but I think there is an architecture computer lab somewhere.

:D deep in the abyss that we'll enter august 27th. Its on the left

If I need to get a laptop shipped to my university address, do I need to provide my room number or the SMC address given on the SIO?

the details of how to order are on the computer store website....link?...here it is: <a href="http://www.cmu.edu/computing/store/freshmen.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.cmu.edu/computing/store/freshmen.html</a></p>

Alright so I need my dorm assignment.Thanks.

to order from the comp store you just need to give them your smc. if you're grabbing it once you get on campus you wont' need it delievered anyway, just go to the computer store personally

What about if you're buying it from Dell Online?

if you buy it now, it'll be at your house before you leave.

If not, get it shipped to your SMC address, they recieve packages from the 14th on so make sure it arrives after the 14th

and dell's estimated delivery times are at least a week pessimistic

Looks OK (though maybe a bit on the slow side, processor-wise).
