For those of you at USC. Did you find a laptop was necessary for everyday use? (I.E. bring to classes, etc.)

I don’t know anyone who has a desktop computer if thats what you’re asking. A good number of people bring their laptop to class to take notes or browse the internet but a lot still take notes by hand. It definitely is more convenient if you wanna sit outside or go to the library or meet up with a group of people and use your computer. Laptops are relatively cheap now and I would definitely get one.

I’ve read through the syllabus for a number of classes I plan to take at USC and many of the professors stress that they disallow students using laptops in class and that all electronic devices such as cell phones should be shut off. Is it common for professors to set this rule or is that practice considered a minority on campus?

I have a desktop, it’s kind-of a beast, and it’ll probably be hard to find room in my dorm. Even still, I plan on buying/bringing a netbook just to carry around for convenience and note-taking (I type 100x faster than I write, not to mention it’s more organized.). So basically I’ll have my desktop for it’s intended purpose (gaming) when I have free time, but I’ll still probably have both.

If you’re asking Laptop vs. Nothing, definitely get a Laptop, especially if you want to be able to connect with family and friends, (which is a big deal for me considering I’m from Kentucky) not to mention you need the internet for research papers, as well as some way to type your papers, and I wouldn’t recommend relying on somebody else for this bc you never know what can happen.
