laptops at UMD - PC or Mac?

I'm a business major at UMD and in a argument with my parents about what kind of laptop I should get. So what would everyone recommend...do I go with the regular pc or apple's macbook pro???

It’s all a matter of personal preference. What do you use at home?

I think you’ll find people making plenty of arguments for both sides, and it comes down to what you’re used to and what you like.

PCs are the standard for the business world.

Typical programs that are used daily - Excel, etc. - are Microsoft products.

It’s not like you can’t run Microsoft products or even Windows itself on a Mac. But it seems stupid to get a Mac just to run Windows.

THAT SAID, it really doesn’t matter if you have a Mac or PC…it’s up to you.

thanks for the response, but one more thing to take into account… I was also planning on minoring in some sort of computer graphics or web design. In that case, I figured I would need a Mac to be successful in computer graphics. The main reason I am against the Mac is the thousand dollar price difference, otherwise I would have already made my decision…

I don’t really see why you’d need a Mac for computer graphics. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and the upcoming CS5 suite, they all run on both PCs and Macs. If for some reason you really want to use OSX, you can dual boot Win7/OSX, it’ll just take a little more work. Considering you can get a much higher spec’d laptop for the same price as a Macbook, I’d go with a pc.

Well, just as PCs are known as being more common in the business world, Macs are known for being more common in the graphics design field…

If you are minoring in that subject why don’t you call up the department and ask? They’ll have a really good idea about what computer to recommend I imagine.

There are a lot of Macs on campus that are free to use…there are 24 hr labs in several academic buildings with Macs…as well as a lab in the library with Macs, too (I Think that is also 24 hr). If you really needed a Mac, you could use a Mac.

But then the same could be said for a PC. If you really needed a PC you could use a PC etc.

I think the best thing to do would be to call up the college/department and ask specifically about your desired major. They would know more what kinds of programs you’d need.

My son is a computer science major and has a Mac. He has no problems with it for doing schoolwork, etc.

Well if you are in engineering, none of the engineering design programs (or Matlab for math) work on Mac, so my roommate who is an engineering major always has to use my pc laptop.

if your planning to major in any art field then you need a mac.
I considered going to art school for a bit, and its a requirement to have a mac.
