Laptops/Desktops?

What's the computer situation?

From what I could see at a few of the usual suspects, the Mac Book Pro 13" or 15" is the computer of choice.

Depends on the school. There are a bunch of different combinations.
Here are common ones

a. MacbookPros 13"+
b. if a (non apple) laptop, generally dell/hp with big screen, good graphics card, built for entertainment because kids like to watch movies on occasion and generally speaking you dont take your laptop out too much so weight/movement arent issues

c. some kids go with All in Ones (both Mac and PC) and have a smaller, cheaper netbook/laptop for portability
d. some kids are rich and get everything…ie pc with giant monitor, gaming laptop, and netbook

For me, all you really need is a laptop that does this: run microsoft word, excell, and has internet - after that everything else is extra

I personally have a 5yr old dell laptop, external monitor, and a printer

all personal preference

Some schools supply the laptop, whether you have your own or not. Some schools have limits on the monitor size that can be brought into a dorm.

For reasons that I cannot recall, before September we believed that the majority of Exeter students were PC users, as are my wife and I. However, for reasons of ease of use, reliability, ruggedness, better support, etc., we decided to purchase a MacBook Pro 13" for our son to bring to Exeter. After a few weeks there, he observed that the MacBook Pro was perhaps the most popular computer on campus. Go figure…
