What are some good laptops for Mechanical Engineers? Cost is not an issue.
Our son is an entering Freshman AE major… so similar to Mech Eng. We spoke at length with the IT store at the GT Barnes and Nobles about this issue. We were looking at laptops. We decided to keep his desktop PC (fairly modern - i7, 32GB RAM, etc…) for his “heavy lifting” and the got him an Apple iPad Pro for his mobile device. We believe that many of the heavy duty applications can run virtually (on the GT servers) while being accessed from almost any device (Apple or PC). Our son is already loving the iPad Pro, but it is a modest compromise to a full featured PC laptop. This does not answer your question directly, but I hope gives insight into one possible solution.
Hey! current ME student at Tech here. I would advise you to stay away from Macs. While they are some of the best laptops you can buy, a lot of the programs required for major classes do not work on macs (unless you are comfortable with BootCamp).
The laptop I see most around school has to be the Lenovo ThinkPad. I also see a lot of surface books in lecture, but I suspect those who use that laptop have a desktop in their dorm. Really, as long as it uses Windows and has sufficient hardware to handle CAD you should be fine.
Dell is fine too, and Lenovo.
DS16 loves his Surface book laptop. It is going strong and has served him well as an engineering student. Make sure you refer to your universities recommended specs.
Here is a GaTech laptop hardware specs I could find on line.
