Laptops Vs. Desktops

hey question for ya…who got accepted and basically everyone going to college neext year…what would be better a laptop or a desktop and which type ?

I'm probably getting a laptop. It just seems more convenient because you can take it places instead of having it sit on your desk. If I earn enough money this summer, I could be coming home once a month, so being able to bring my computer back and forth will be a big plus (I need to be productive while my mom is doing my laundry). I guess a plus for a desk top is that it is harder to steal, but there are ways you can lock your laptop to your desk if you are worried that people at Penn steal.

yea dat was mah biggest and pry only concern

i'd say laptop (windows) for portability. personally, i'm gonna get a gaming laptop. they may be heavier, but some are almost as fast as desktops...

yea...am thinkin about a sony vio(spell check)

sonys are the best. IF you have the money get a vaio sz series. they are light thin, have built in finger print reader, and are as fast if not faster than most desktops due to the core 2 duo processors.

Wait for Windows Vista to come out (Supposedley Jan 30) before you buy anything... you'll thank me after you save hundreds of dollars.

ima get a tablet pc with vista. much better than desktops for college

Don't buy anything until you find out the specific requirements for your college at Penn. Also, don't buy the Vista when it comes out. Who knows how many bugs it will have. Might as well get it when they fix everything.

a laptop is a laptop. you can get a solid dell for less than a grand that will serve you fine.

a service pack wont be out for vista for probably a year and thats because it will not be needed. If you buy a vista capable pc it come with a free upgrade.

I think it is too early to buy anything. I think students get really good discounts if they buy their computers from the penn store. So I would wait till august to buy anything. At that time vista will be out for some time...

^^^good discounts? yea right, u will probably be only given the option of buying IBM thinkpads, which are lightweight and nice, but very expensive.

they have macs and regular windows PC. Read the older threads and you will see.

I would buy an Apple laptop. I have a MacbookPro at the moment, but when I'm admitted for the class of 2012 I will definately replace it with a new Apple laptop.

Does Penn have specific computer requirements?

Sony Vaio suuucks. Get an HP.

I think they recommend certain specs for computers on one of their websites. Just look around and you'll find it. I believe they recommend a centrino duo core processor for laptops.

fyi for those looking for a FAST thin a light take a look at the Asus A8JS. Core 2 Duo T7200, 2Gb Ram, Geforce 7700 Go w/ 512 Mb Ram, DVD burner, 3 hour battery life, 1440x900 14 inch widescreen, 5 lbs, $1800ish. I just got one from milestonepc.com that I'm using for college and I love it so far. The screens a little small but it's fast and light, and I hook it up to an external monitor at home. Price to performance is great, and it comes with xp pro and a free upgrade to vista...

In highschool right now... will use for college next year. I bring it to class with me this year though :)
