Whatever virus going around that’s causing laryngitis this year is BAD news. Seriously. We are at 8 weeks since her first cold symptoms appeared. Sickness is fully gone but D has been left with some crappy but common post laryngitis struggles.
I’m sorry for anyone else dealing with this. It is such a bummer. And I feel like we are taking such a "hit’ as far as missing out on so much. This whole semester is a bust (vocally) and she’s only got 3 more to go. Sigh.
I am glad people are posting though. I’m feeling pretty sorry for my D (and myself, too if I’m being honest) as this has been so stressful. It helps to know that we’re not alone. I know there are other threads with instrumentalists struggling with injuries as well. It’s tough,
This is a bit of a non-music tangent, but an employee at my mother’s assisted living had mono, then surgery on her tonsils, and her voice hasn’t come back. She is in Massachusetts. Does anyone have a good doctor to recommend for her? Her job depends on her voice.
Hey there @Scubachick - now it’s my daughter with the laryngitis. After a great coaching session last Thursday afternoon my daughter completely lost her voice by bedtime. Just came out of the blue. How long did it take for your daughter to be able to sing one she started on the steroid pack?
Thanks @Scubachick - so sorry about the summer program auditions. So frustrating… My daughter is a Junior, so she’s just sending in recordings for summer programs, except possibly for Brevard. But the laryngitis means delaying the recording session until after Thanksgiving. And, she basically had to skip her school audition for spring scenes just now. She showed up and spoke/performed the French text and submitted her most recent audio recording of the aria from studio. It was a novel approach - and they did commend her for her resolve. ? She has UMd on her grad school list at the moment. If it sticks perhaps she could chat with your daughter at some point.
I saw an ENT today - no issue with my vocal cords - at least no visible damage after an apparently thorough and rather unpleasant exam (I hate having long strings with a camera on it shoved into your nose to look at your voice box). It’s largely my nasal cavity that is constantly irritated due to recurring allergies, so I’m going ahead with treatment on that. I hope to not be so unlucky with colds next semester - he suggested that it’s because I was homeschooled and wasn’t around so many people, so I just never got immune (which is probably true).
I had yet another cold (but very slight) the day of my jury - I think I got an A- or A on the jury regardless (which was due to incorrect breath and a delayed entrance on one piece) - see my other thread for another update!
