First of all, congratulations to the students in class of 2017 on their impeccable taste. I'm currently entering my third year at Vanderbilt. I'm a double major in the CAS, and I am a former VUceptor. In addition, I'm Greek. If you have any last-minute questions before move-in next week, I'll be checking this thread periodically over the next few days. I'll do my best to answer your questions as candidly as possible.

1) There are about 5 activities/dinners/receptions on Saturday of move in that are on my D’s schedule. None of them designate if they are parent/student or just student. Some are obvious about parents not attending (dorm meeting at night); but are parents supposed to attend the dinner, President’s reception, etc?
2) I would assume any reception or dinner involving a Head of House or other “bigwigs” would require dressy clothes for the student, is this right?

Dinner is buffet style in big tents outside. Your heels wil get stuck in the grass The thing at the dean’s house is like an open house. I would say no t-shirts and athletic shorts but not super fancy dress either. I don’t remember any other formal events.

Where did you find the schedule of events for move-in day? I’ve looked through everything they have mailed us and haven’t seen it. I finally found one on-line (VUPoint) but it’s a publication they won’t receive until move-in day.
It can be found here <a href=“Vanderbilt University”>Vanderbilt University;

All of the information on the schedule of activities for the first two weeks of their lives at Vandy was on the Class of 2017 Facebook page. It listed both mandatory and optional meetings (from the receptions all the way to religious service options) for the first ten days to two weeks!

Dress for comfort–it will be hot and humid in Nashville! As a freshman parent a couple of years ago, I was very glad that we attended the Saturday night dinner under the tents on the lawn, lots of families there with their students; also seem to recall eating a lunch in the Commons cafeteria shortly after move in which was a nice way to see where my child would be eating for the 8+ months…the Sunday breakfast at the Commons was a mob scene so we ended up skipping that.

S says he is nervacited. It’s a word we’ve been using this week. Driving into Nashville as we speak. We’ll check in at the B and B we are staying at and then head out to set up a checking account and probably visit the bookstore. I might try to get them to do a walk on campus to see classrooms. It was a tradition S and I did every year before the start of middle school and high school.

Freshman move in is an exciting time and Vanderbilt is a special place. Parents rest assured Vanderbilt is a wonderful academic and social community for 18 year old students to move into adulthood. Enjoy the week!

Yes, to the vacuum cleaner, especially for girls. We didn’t bring one but ended up buying a small stick vacuum during parents’ weekend because so much hair and dust was collecting on the dorm floor. Everyone on the floor ended up using it throughout the year.

We also bought a stick vacuum for S1 and he uses it. I don’t know if there are standard uprights available to borrow from cleaning closets in the dorms.
