I've contacted them via email and informed them of his current piece and level and they are considering accepting him (deadline has past) upon speaking with him and his cello teacher on the phone and then we'll send a video audition.

After reading on this message board and receiving many helpful PM's, I realize how important an intense 2 week summer camp would be for him.

If you know of this camp, please post your thoughts. PM or email me if there is negative feedback that we sould be aware of.

For next summer, you should look into Greenwood Music Camp, in Cummington, Mass. -- it offers chamber music and orchestra, mostly for string players, and kids love it there.

Thanks for the rec. I believe we've missed the boat for this year. He's only available from Aug. 5 thru Aug. 19 and then our schools start back Aug. 21st!!
It dosen't leave much room for anything. I'll keep searching.

In answer to your original question, YES an intensive summer music experience will be invaluable: He will meet other teachers and kids who are focused on music, he will make incredible progress (usually) and he will find out whether this is really something he wants to pursue in college.

I second the Luzerne suggestion. My D did three wonderful summers there in middle school (their Junior session). Their four-week senior session for high-school ages kids runs July 23-August 19 this year, and they may very well offer the flexibility to go for only part of that time. Bert Phillips (co-owner of the camp) is a wonderful cellist, and there is a huge emphasis on chamber music.

See what the University of Minnesota (Might be called "Bravo" but I cannot remember...sorry) has for a summer music/strings camp. It is a good string program, and I had heard their summer program was revived last year. I know they were looking for cellists at one point. Good luck.
