Haha, you guys are funny. You can use one little post of self-reported stats to judge who "deserves" to get in and who doesn't. How do you guys choose your friends? Go around and ask what their test scores are and then decide? Or what they think about their writing ability or just how big their ego is in general? Give me a break. There's a hell of a lot more to an applicant than some stupid test score or GPA. Once you get here, it's not just the people who spent $5000 to jump from a 2100 to 2380 SATs who do well. Honestly, some people who you get the feeling probably had perfect SATs and a 4.0 GPA and were involved in five million honor societies and clubs in high school come here and really find it difficult because they've either been pushed by their parents to do that stuff their entire lives (let's face it, as a kid going into 9th grade very few of us were self-motivated to study all the time or join a million clubs) or have never really had to deal with failure in any way. Sure, it's not fair to punish people who have always been perfect or something by not admitting them, but at the same time Cornell doesn't just want SAT monsters who sit around in their rooms studying during what free time they have between the 8 honor societies they promptly join upon their arrival on campus. There's more to it than stupid test scores or ECs...

anyway...9 more days..then we can complain/argue/brag legimitately. Gah. Thinking about this makes my heart twist.

Well, by seeing this, we see that rejection from a certain school doesn't mean anything. It doesn't mean just not as smart or as qualified. I think it's simply means that you weren't fit for that school. I think admission officers know what their looking for and they try to find people that would match the college. so a rejection doesn't mean ANYTHING. It just wasnt meeant to bee. blah.everything will be just fine. so just breath guys! . im just rambling now. but good luck everyone!!

gah... this thread scares me!

Are the decisions based on how many of that type of person they have already accepted, there are so many (not trying to stereotype and an Asian myself (male 17)) Asian girls within top 5%, 12 years of violin, 500+hours of CS etc, like my sister who didn't get accepted to cornell CAS RD when she got highest IB score in school, etc...Cornell tries to be a diverse university, not like Harvard with white-caucasians or Berkely with thousands of Koreans

wow last year's decisions are scaryyyyyy
I saw only like 4 or so people with ok stats get in...
seems like essays played a big part too...

I'm not worried about my essays, but
I'm seriously worried about my ok stats...

but this gave me a feel of reality and hardened me to be
ready and prepared if I don't get accepted..

ok, no offense to anyone here and Im not calling anyone a liar but how do we know that those ppl, who got rejected, are telling the truth?? Do you guys just believe ppl bc they post things? I bet that out of all those ppl who posted their stats, at least half of them lied. So dont get disappointed if you see a kid with "GREAT STATS" get rejected bc theres a high chance that those arent his/her real stats but what he/she WANTS them to be

er after reading jae6forever's inspirational thread I still feel So anxious..
Okay guys how do u think a generic essay would hurt my chances? a sealed fate? an 70% fatal flaw? or 50%?? pleease help, any comment is Very appreciated!

oh.. em correction, now "a", but Two ><

how generic of an essay is it?

well the tie breakers, especially since people applying to ivy leagues are very smart and have similar stats, are most of the times essays, recs, and ECs...

If someone has similar stats as you and adcom is trying to decide who to accept and it takes a look at both essays to see who stands out and who fit into cornell more. If your essay doesn't stand out more than the other person... you know...

but as boonies said, it really depends on how generic it is.

and boonies, I agree that these stats from last year may not be true.
b/c take a look, people who got in are so happy that they don't even right like the whole thing under factors and stuff they usually say... omg omg omg i can't believe it! can't even remember, etc while rejected or deferred people go on and explain everything from recs and essays to kind of, forgive me, self justify or just justify their deferral and rejection.

that's just my thought... but it is a chance to do a reality check...

lol wowser, i know.. I have a good math and sciences hook (if u count that as a hook), with very nice ranking in contests but no science fairs tho. And other than that I would be totally destroyed in the tie-breaker round. So do you think I would be kinda ok if I am not being compared with some similar stats people? Cause I rarely see any CCers with very good contests and theoretical math and science background (note I did not include researching background here). So does that mean I wont be compared with a lot of people?

One of my essays is about my friendly competition with some one and my "not afraid of challeges (which makes me puke now)". A friend who is pretty critical and writes very well said the competition part is personal and unique, but the "challenges" part has major problems, since I was like "I have done this and this" in a listing but not narrative form.

Then my supplement essay is about my evolving interest in science (another common topic I assume). It's hard to summarize this essay.. since I did a very chaotic job there. Basically in both essays, I told them but didn't show them, and my voice is overly formal, and.. I sounded like I am braging about my awards in both essays (I got the false impression that I should sell myself in the essays).

If you could access my chances pleease help.. so I could stop thinking at one moment "i would be rejected because 1. 2. 3. 4." and the other moment think "probably they would be impressed by my stats.."

well you're an asian, no?
then aptitude in math & sci isn't a big hook and sci fair and competition, while very impressive, seems to be pretty common among asians (i mean look at the grand prize winners of ISEF and all that).

your essays sound fine albeit you wrote about a common topic, if you presented it in a creative and refreshing manner, it's okay.

although the fact that the tone was overly formal and bragging may work negatively against you, with good stats
and impressive ECs, I think you have a pretty good chance... but we'll find out in like 3 days.

haha thanks, now I can just settle down and wait for my deferment. Since my essay is certainly not creative and refreshing, nor is my ECs impressive. But I can improve my essays for sure during the RD round. Oh well thanks so much for your inputs wowser, I ll just expect for the worst and see what happens.

lol omg yeah...with being Asian..I tried really hard to make my liberal artsy side show through my entire app to Cornell..and personally, though I've taken the most science/math courses than anybody at my school, my abilities strongly lie in the humanities. Thus I reallllllllly reallllllly fleshed it out in my app. I hope my strategy works..haha.

But Mak5im, I really doubt a generic essay will break you. I've never heard of any essay getting you into a college, it's your stats that come first, then the essay serves as an insight to your personality. If you have amazing stats, I wouldn't be worried...

haha guess I will find out how amazing my stats are in three days. Think it's time for me to stop accessing my chances and just start counting down.

YES!
good for you.
try not to stress over things you can't control...
stress over things you CAN control... like your grades and regular apps
