Having a hard time deciding between Greek or Latin. I am also considering other languages such as Gaelic or something non-Latin-based. My likely major will either be something in science (engineering, physics, chemistry, etc) or management (where I would likely pursue a career in management at six flags). Things I would like out of this language include:
Applicable to these fields
Relatively easy to learn
Fairly unique
These aren’t too important to my decision, I’m mostly making this to hear some of my options.
Both Latin and Greek are very mathematical languages that require a lot of categorization and application of concepts. The most notable quality about these languages is that learning them is like learning algebra. Both languages have relatively similar structures, but Latin is easier in the respect that its characters have less symbols. Also, in my opinion, Latin poetry is much more fun to read than Greek plays (I mean, have you read Catullus? That guy is WILD). Either language will be applicable to the field of science because studying these languages teach you to think differently and blend the abstract meanings with the mathematical logic of the language. However, if you want the easier language, take Latin. If you don’t have much time to devote to Greek, your head will spin with all of the different symbols that you have to use. Also, a forewarning: both languages start hard at first and get A LOT easier as you progress, so don’t let introductory Latin scare you away. It’ll seem like a lot at first, but eventually it’ll all make sense.
