My daughter is a very good Latin (classics) student. Does anyone know of any colleges that offer merit scholarships in Latin/Classics?
What are your D’s stats?
There are schools that have good Classics depts that give large awards for good stats.
All A’s in Latin I-IV, next year she will take AP Latin, Gold medal in the National Latin exam all years participating and captain of her competition team (where they took gold) at her HS in NY.
Are the rest of her grades also really high? Has she taken the SAT or ACT yet?
What part of the country would she like her college to be in?
All her grades are very high, she’s only a sophomore so no scores yet(PSAT approx. 200). Trying to get information so I’m ahead of the game. She’ll look anywhere but the south.
She should have a number of good options if her SAT score is also high.
I would say…her Latin is a great thing that will certainly help her if she continues to have that interest. But really, her overall admissions picture is i oortant as well.
She should also try a little prep for her junior year PSAT as that is the one that will count for national merit consideration.

Why not the south??? The south is where much of the merit money is!!!
the NE can be crappy with merit that makes a good dent in costs. The west coast can be crappy as well.
If you want more than just a small token award that barely reduces the total cost, then you need to consider where the money is. If she’s thinking that the South doesn’t have The Classics, she’s mistaken.
Classics Depts are rarely going to have their own funding to give out of any substantial amount. The awards that your D will be given will VERY likely come from the university…not the dept. So, the awards would be based on her overall GPA and SAT and ACT scores. Not based on latin exams, or latin grades.
What do you want your annual net costs to be for each year of college? $15k per year? more? less?
You make some good points, I’ll work on the south with her! I would be happy with any merit money, her brother goes to Holy Cross College and we receive nothing. It definitely hurts
It sounds like you are not eligible for need based aid…and will be looking for merit aid. Merit aid is usually based on overall GPA, and SAT or ACT scores. Once your kiddo is a junior, you will have a better sense of where those stats are.
You might want to open this lonk, and look at some of the threads in it…just for ideas. look at all of the topics, and open and read them.
Not sure what your son is studying at Holy Cross, but they do have two full-tuition 4 year competitive scholarships in Classics they award each year to incoming freshman:
