Latops at USNA

I thought I read something a couple of months ago on this forum about laptops at USNA but I couldn't find it. I know they provide each mid with a desktop but I know laptops are allowed. For current mids and knowledgeable parents, do many of the mids have laptops, and if so, do they bring them to class? Can you connect to the Naval Academy's network and/or internet?

i know at NAPS, laptops are allowed

I actually talked to a friend at the academy about this very topic couple days ago. He said that many people have laptops and yes you can bring them to class. The downside is that you are not allowed EVER to connect to their wireless/wired network at any time. So basically no internet which completely trash's my whole reason for wanting one in the first place. Hey I could always type a word document or something! WHOOPIE

My parents promised me an alienware laptop if i went to USNA or a civilian school on NROTC which i got accepted for. I'm not going to make my parents buy me an alienware laptop which i can't even connect to the internet with. :(

So you can only connect to the USNA network with an issued PC?

at this point, that's correct. However, for the class of '10, they may offer plebes the option of purchasing either a laptop or desktop.

The computer for the class of '10 is already bid and the specs are available online (a desktop). Here is the link (I hope) http://candidatedata.usna.edu/computerspecs.asp

Maybe they are considering laptops for the class of '11.
CM

Those are last year's computer specs!

It says 2010 at the top of the page>>>>maybe the navy got a good deal on last years model.

No...they just updated the page title. Same thing happened last year. They didn't update the actual contents until at least May, but I think it was actually after plebe summer started (if I remember correctly).

I would b*tch like heck if I had to pay last years price on last years computer this coming fall! Don't forget, they are deducting this from your pay!

Hopefully we're able to add things to it. I've got 512 of extra RAM and a quad set of Firewire ports on my computer (a dell very similar to these), and I could easilly bring them with me and put them in this one (if that's allowed)...

I was saying earlier that only 512 RAM in a 3 Ghz machine is kind of stupid. Navylax 2010, from past experience with building computers and upgrading RAM, you really need to buy the EXACT same RAM that is currently in the computer for them to work together properly or replace all the RAM with your own. I am not saying you can't mix and match other RAMs, but there is a great chance they won't work well together if you try.

SD, you are correct about the RAM.

Hehehe...When Spider was in the 5th grade, his dad and I promised him a Viper if he got into USNA. Might have to rethink that one a bit :)

Yes, i think you may. Im hoping maybe i can suck a car out of my parents by 2nd class year or something.

SD thanks for the insight. I looked, and talked to a few guys about it, and it appears that I may be able to pull it off. It's worth a shot atleast. Our consensus is that it will work though (512+512 = 1024), so if it does work, I'll be just over a gig (yay). Thanks for the help though!

no if you have 1024 you have 1 gig not over a gig. bytes are binary and therefore use that system therefore inorder to go to the next prefix you need 1024 of something.

laptops aren't worth it
and never really saw a mid with one

My Mid added RAM and replaced the video card. The RAM was not the same brand as that which was installed. Everything worked perfectly and the video card was a major improvement.

Wow, im excited now, the biggest thing I was going to miss from home was my computer that I built. Now, I can just take parts from it to school with me.
