law and CPA

I know a couple people who have done this- any thoughts on it? advantages disadvantages? would doing both (CPA during tax season) allow a private practice lawyer to make more? is that feasable?

If you are interested in being a tax lawyer, law and cpa will enable you to get a good job with an accounting firm or law firm or the IRS. I know a tax lawyer who used his status as a cpa to become the head of the local cpa organization and use referrals from his cpa friends to make a pretty good living.

If you are interested in being a cpa who is also a lawyer, the benefit is not as significant.

If you are interested in being a CPA in auditing as well as being a general practice lawyer, it can be done but is very difficult. You would have to meet the continuing education requirements of both professions and that may cut into your billable hours. You will have to be on the top of your game for two professions instead of one. You may have to employ separate staffs for each business. I know one lawyer who also was a cpa and had a cpa business, he was very detailed and very hard working. I say "was" because he is now in jail awaiting trial for murder. He shot a neighbor trespassing on his property. They had had a long running feud to say the least. I don't think his law degree or cpa contributed to his being a killer, but it makes for interesting table conversation.
