Hey do any of you think its possible to get a degree in say finance, econ, math or something and then go get a law degree instead of an MBA and still work in the Ib/hedge fund industry. The only reason i ask is because I think it would be more helpful in general to have a law degree than an MBA and most MBA programs are redundant if you get a business oriented major.
Thanks

Hedge fund no, unless you are working in the legal dept. IB it is possible, but not straight out of law school, unless you go the JD/MBA route. Otherwise, you’d have to work in law for a few years, ideally M&A, securities, restructuring, etc, and then attempt to make a move through contacts, etc.

You say an MBA is redundant, but if you want to go into IB, then it’s not even terribly relevant unless you are talking just about some business law classes, but that is not worth the degree.

For a hedge fund, the MBA is absolutely preferred, but if you are looking at more of a quant role, then forget about both and go for a tough Master’s in applied math, etc.

Finally, if you don’t like the MBA, I wouldn’t recommend the JD, instead, try networking now and breaking in straight out of U Grad.
