My daughter has 1 year to go in her undergraduate program and is currently studying for the LSAT and hopes to go to law school.
Does anyone have any tips/sources for finding summer jobs/internships in anything law related? A paid job/internship is preferred since we cannot afford living expenses elsewhere.
This is my question too but my D is only a freshman at college. I would have her look into her college’s career center regarding any internship opportunities. Also ask if there is some type of alumni organization that can put her in touch with graduates in your area. There are some summer law camps around as well that she might be interested in. You can pm me if you want any info on this.
It’s tough to find law-related, paid internships as an undergraduate. Typically you can find unpaid government internships that are valuable or you can find paid clerical jobs at law firms that aren’t all that valuable. If your daughter is interested only in getting experience for an application, don’t sweat it - most law schools care about LSAT + GPA and use other factors (essay, awards, experience) only as tie-breakers.
If she is on the fence about applying to law school right out of college, then it would make sense to try to get experience before applying. If she is still on the fence, then I suggest that she work for 1-2 years before applying. Her scores would still be valid so she wouldn’t need to take the LSAT again, and she’d be more certain that she wants to go through the time and expense of law school.
I speak from experience. I wanted to be a lawyer for ten years, until I studied for and took the LSAT. I realized I didn’t want to be a lawyer anymore, and I’ve never looked back
Locally, it seems the only jobs for college students and college graduates are for runners. It seems the internships and more educational jobs are reserved for actual law students.
