Lawrenceville School

@coconutcake Most of the GLADCHEMMS(except lville) does not offer it because of the distance between the school and a prestigious university. Princeton is just 10 min from Lvile.

how hard is it to get into lville? what should i do to increase my chances?

Something between 18-21% hard. Write good essays and, its not essential, but it would be helpful to get on the 90’s percentile on the SSAT.

POPS - we know a child who is a repeat 11th grader and is a hockey player at at TSAO school. Also, my son has complained that some of the freshman hockey players at his school (another TSAO school) scored between 30-40% on the SSAT. He has actually complained to me that the bar is considerably lower for hockey. Since YOUR child doesn’t seem to fall into that category, I would think he would be a great candidate. Benley’s right - you son has had a year to prove himself and did well!

I am sorry to disturb you, but I am glad I have found a thread or forum like yours! I have been looking on Instagram and that has not worked out to well. I have several questions for you if you do not mind.
Is it easy to get in as a freshman?
Do you get a lot of spare time?
Do freshmans have a lot of freedom?
What does Lville look for in students?
Does everyone treat each other fairly, regardless of skin tone?
My personality is very weird, friendly, and bubbly. Would I be able to make friends? Or are the students at the school different?
If I join Dance at the school, do I have to be good at it at first to join?
What is the best House for girls?

Have you visited the school? These would be great questions to ask your tour guide, w the exception of the question “Is it easy to get in as a freshman?”.

That answer is “No”

I have gotten the chance to go on a the tour during the summer. Unfortunately, I did not have enough time with her to ask her these questions.

Do you get a lot of spare time? No, I wish I had more free time
Do freshmans have a lot of freedom? Not much you have check in, late lights, classes, study halls…
What does Lville look for in students? Ask admissions office
Does everyone treat each other fairly, regardless of skin tone? Yes, it is really diverse there is no kind of racism
My personality is very weird, friendly, and bubbly. Would I be able to make friends? Or are the students at the school different? You certainly would, there are all kind of people here
If I join Dance at the school, do I have to be good at it at first to join? No most of the people that sign up for it are trying it for the first time
What is the best House for girls? All the houses are good, don’t worry about that…You 'll just go to a house in your soph yr and you will think that your house is the best in the world

If the answers to any of those questions are not deal breakers for you, then go ahead and apply. You may have another chance to ask lots of questions on Revisit Day, before making the final decision to enroll.

We are considering LVille for my son. How is the athletic scene there? Comparing it to similar rivalry schools (Deerfield/Choate, Andover/Exeter, etc.) is there a special rivalry that LVille has when it comes to athletics? And to me (and this is only IMO), the house system is VERY different than what I’ve learned from other BS’s. Do you feel like it creates a greater separation amongst students?

“is there a special rivalry that LVille has when it comes to athletics?”

[What does The Hill vs. Lawrenceville rivaly mean to Hill students and alumni? on Vimeo](http://vimeo.com/56774911)

Thre is an athletic rivalry with Hill, which is really big, even though hill is much inferior tha lville.

House system is the best! I really love it! But there is no separation among students, i have friends in other houses, but most of my friends are in my house.

^ yeah, truth be told, people here tend to have a superiority complex against Hill because “we’re a better school”. I have friends at Hill and their sentiment of rivalry towards us is MUCH stronger.

I daresay our interhouse rivalry is stronger than the Lville-Hill rivalry.

@conserve: to put it simply, houses function like normal dorms, but with the sense of “identity” (= tighter bonds between dorm mates) the associated traditions provide.

from [The Lawrenceville School: House System](Life at Lawrenceville - The Lawrenceville School)

816 students living in 20 houses, so about 40 students per house. I’m a little concerned about separating students into 3 large groups: freshmen, sophomores+juniors, and seniors. Some people might like it…

The House system does amplify the schism between freshmen, sophomores + juniors, and seniors. But it by no means cripples the overall school spirit, and it also has its fair share of advantages. I’m pretty sure the two years of BELONGING in a house are, for many students, one of the most integral part of the Lawrenceville experience which CAN’T be replicated by the 9-12 system that dorms in certain other schools employ.

The boys’ houses, especially, have INTENSE traditions that will stick with you even many years after graduation. Freshmen by the end of the first year get all excited about getting into the House of their choice. This explains the plethora of interesting anecdotes you WILL hear from Lville alums about their unforgettable 2 years of living in their houses. Seniors are usually so attached to their houses that they often come back to hang out with the prefects. Too bad, our current headmaster doesn’t really understand tradition, so who knows how the House system will turn out in the coming years…

House system is the best thing ever and it is true that the rivalry between houses is greater than the one against Hill. It is not a complex, Hill is actually inferior to Lville. Lawrenceville can just be compared to the GLADCHEMMS.
The House system will not be altered by the headmaster nor by anyone because it is the biggest tradition in the school, and the alumni+the board of trustees + faculty+ students would NEVER accept.

^ think about House football and say it again…and most of the traditions, once exposed, are crushed by the administration.

Also, Lville-Hill is an athletic rivalry, not an academic rivalry. But I guess we still beat them plenty in every single Hill weekend. ;)

FYI for Lville students visiting Princeton campus: meningitis outbreak.
7 confirmed cases.

Is it common to see freshmen + sophmores taking another science course as their 6th course? Do most focus on one branch of science or just take introductory classes for science?

You can’t really double on the sciences in your frosh and soph year, unless you have already placed out of math/language at the end of your frosh year. . .So many frickin’ requirements to fulfill.
