Lawrenceville vs Deerfield

ALL schools organize shuttles to the airport, but typically not at the START & END of the school year. And even w shuttles, the fact remains that w a choice of 4 airports + train, the Princeton area offers a lot more travel convenience (and hotel options) for yourself and for your parents when they visit.

@GMTplus7 @mrnephew I agree that the convenience of Lville being close to EWR, JFK, and even PHL, is pretty hard to beat.

I know that there is a very insignificant difference (and that it shouldn’t influence my decision), but just out of curiosity, which of these schools is more “prestigious”?

They are peer schools

@afzfsf Deerfield. PM me if you want a personalized version of my not-exactly-original D’field rant.

To be clear: In 2016, Deerfield is more “prestigious” than Lawrenceville. It is also more prestigious.

I take offense to that. Simply unsupported.

It’s like asking whether chocolate or vanilla is better and saying chocolate, period. Without any facts to support the evidence, or any statements explaining the reasoning behind it.

The vast majority of people in the US couldn’t name a single boarding school if their life depended on it. So don’t let boarding school prestige factor into in. 8-|

They are the same from a prestige standpoint. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Apart from the commuting issue, here is another point to consider: Princeton area has a lot easier access to Uber drivers. Makes it much easier to get a ride for quick bite to eat, or a movie off campus. This is much more difficult to do at Deerfield.

Although I agree that Lawrenceville has better transportation overall, there is a thing that existed before the advent of Uber. It’s called a taxi. You can get taxis in Deerfield from neighboring Greenfield.

Prestige is context sensitive. Nature is the most prestigious scientific journal, but outside the scientific community it means little. Lamborghini cries Prestige to race car fans but for people who use cars to drive from point A to B only it means nothing. Same goes with prep school prestige. It means something only to those who have knowledge and experience with them (colleges, for example, that have worked with different schools for a long time). To them, my guess is that a number of schools are at about the same level in the prestige barometer, and I agree with other posters that Deerfield and Lawrenceville are certainly in the same league, so prestige shouldn’t be a factor in this decision making process.

@GMTplus7 @panpacific I definitely won’t let prestige factor into the decision, I was just kinda curious lol.

@sgopal2 @doschicos Thanks for the transportation insight, I will weigh this in when deciding for sure.

Enrolled at Lawrenceville.

Yay, so did my daughter and she was choosing between Choate and L’ville!
Congratulations!

@lookin4info Thank you! Same to you and your daughter! I guess I’ll see her around campus this fall lol.
