I know that it's not necessary, but, were I to go to McGill, I would definitely want to learn French. Any (formerly) monolingual anglophones with advice on the best way to learn French while at McGill? That is, from McGill or elsewhere, and what kind of a programme?

I'm not an anglophone to begin with but there are tons of immersion programs you can do (everywhere in the province or even outside, for example, a friend of mine went to Moncton, New-Brunswick). McGill's principal herself did some immersion in Chicoutimi when she got the job at McGill.

Cheapest way to learn French is to call up Canadian immigration and ask where the nearest free FSL classes are held. They're tailored towards newly arrived immigrants but unilingual anglos such as myself should greatly benefit from them. You can also take French at McGill but I honestly found it a bit lacking. The YMCA also offfers private French lessons for cheaper then what McGill charges.

There are plenty of books avaliable if you want to build your vocab or learn common phrases.
