Hello, I am a freshman at UCSD. During the ONE WEEK I’ve been here, I hate it. I am homesick to the maximum and cannot handle it. I am from LA and always wanted to go to UCLA, but got denied. I couldn’t get home off my mind, so I took a visit to the academic counselor. She advised me of an option that I’ve never heard of. She said I could finish off the quarter and take a break from UCSD. During that break, I could go to Community College to do TAP, major pre reqs, and get a good GPA. Then I could try to transfer. If I were to get into UCLA, I could stay. If I got denied, I could go back to SD. As an anonymous internet poster, I can not share all the details to why I am homesick, but I do believe this is a good opportunity for myself to mature and grow as a person for a little longer. Moreover, it gives me a second shot, but a better shot at my dream school. Realistically, how hard or easy is it to transfer from CC to UCLA for a neuroscience major. Thank you.
The UC’s are transfer-friendly, but they also receive thousands of transfer apps every year. Did the Academic Counselor say that you would have to reapply to UCSD as a transfer, or that admissions would be automatic without an application (and should you not get into LA)? If the latter, get that in writing, (since I’ve never heard of it.)
You do understand that you would have to attend community college all of this year and next year, and transfer for your Junior (3rd) year?
If you do go that route, I suggest you see if you can get into the Honors program at your cc.
Good luck.
I agree with @bluebayou that I have never heard that you will automatically be reinstated at UCSD if you do not get into UCLA.
UCLA only accepts Junior level transfers and you will need at least a 3.7+ GPA if you want a good chance at transferring.
It is only been 1 week and you really need to give it more time. You might want to check out this link: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/college-life/2016222-to-those-who-feel-lonely-homesick-friendless-think-they-chose-the-wrong-school-etc-p1.html
@bluebayou @Gumbymom The counselor said that you’d have to apply for readmission, but if you left in good academic standing the first quarter youd most likely be gauranteed back. (2.0 GPA) Yeah, either way, I’m giving UCSD a quarter and if I still don’t like it, I want to go back home and gather my thoughts for another 2 years and chase UCLA again.
I don’t think UCSD would guarantee you a return spot. Please double check with your advisor. I’ve never heard of a leave of absence as you describe.
That being said, I’ve known several students who go from one college to a CCC and then transfer to a UC including UCLA.
@svlab112 I was confused as well, but I asked her and she said you have to apply for readmission. Although she said it wasn’t a 100% guarantee, she said she’s never seen someone not be readmitted.
Assuming things work the same at UCSD as they do at UCLA, if you are not enrolled for 2 consecutive quarters, you have to apply for readmission. But this does not mean that you are applying to college all over again, you just need to file paperwork. Generally, if you were in good academic standing when you left, your readmission will be approved.
