Is it possible to be legacy (if your grandparents went to college there) and 1st gen (if your parents didn't go to college at all)?

There is no place to write on the apps “I’m a first gen student.” They merely ask for parents’ education history. So just fill out the common app and supplements with the utmost truth, and let each college decide for themselves how they want to classify and deal with it. No use worrying over it, since you have no control over how they will perceive it.

However, if you want legacy status, you must include your grandparents’ educational status as well. For the legacy university, you are not “first generation.” The point of “first generation” is to identify those students whose family is unfamiliar with higher education and did not have the opportunity to go to college, not those who chose not to go to college.

Yep, as I mentioned, just fill out your entire common app and all supplements with the truth. And let them take it from there. If they don’t ask about grandparents, you are out of luck, but if they do, fill it out.
