how strong of a role does legacy play in admissions, and does it only apply when appying ED?

I ask because I think I have very strong legacy there- mom, sister(current student), grandfather, aunt, great uncle. I also know that tons of kids there have legacy so this might not be that impressive. Thanks for your help!!

Do a quick search on Ephblog.com for discussions pertaining to Legacies.

Williams College does consider Legacy as a factor, but not without meeting their admissions requirements.

With increasing percentiles focused on diversity, gender, socio-economic and first-time factors, the competitive aspects of admissions becomes exceedingly complex. As admissions departments appear to be outcome based because of their emphasis on meeting continuously redefined admissions criteria, any one singular factor becomes merely a attribute rather than an admissions ticket.

Dust off your grandfather’s silk ascot and give it a whirl, it may add wind to your sails.

Short version: If you are an AR 1, being a legacy guarantees you admission. If you are a 2, it probably helps. Otherwise, it doesn’t matter. Williams has so many high quality legacy applicants that the legacy and non-legacy students are academically indistinguishable.

It helps but you have to be otherwise qualified. Go visit Williamstown this summer and sign up for the legacy interview with admissions - you will get a very good idea of your admissions chances by talking directly to admissions. My son was told in his legacy interview that his legacy “edge” would still count in the RD round.
