Less popular/not as well known musicals you enjoyed

“Theory of Relativity” was my favorite of the shows in my son’s HS that I saw over over the years.

It was one of my favorites of the movies my kids watched over and over. The music was really good.

I also like the Barbie ballet movies because the music was Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. One day we were in the car and I think listening to NPR. My daughter shouted, “Hey, this is the Barbie song.”

A few of weeks ago, I saw Six with D24. She’s my go-to when there’s a musical I want to see.

We’d had a long gap between the previous show (Evan Hansen back in the fall, I think) and I needed a fix. Nothing in the near term looked like something we’d both enjoy, but I liked the look of Six in the venue ad.

After buying the tix, I looked at some quick clips on line with D26. Yeah, should have done that the other way around. It looked like a poorly-done Hamilton ripoff. I wasn’t impressed with the clips, and D26 (not a musical/theatre lover) really did not like the clips. I immediately had buyer’s remorse.

Fast forward to the show and … it wasn’t bad. I liked the energy of the performers. OTOH, my D24 absolute LOVED the show. As we walked out, she asked when was I buying the soundtrack. So it was a big win as far as I’m concerned.

After the show, I watched more clips online. I liked the clips a lot more after seeing the show. I was a little surprised to see the HUGE love displayed by fans at European settings. Looks like it was a bigger hit over there.

The only thing that irked me was the show was more of six vignettes of character introductions. There wasn’t any plot with an opening, middle and end. It’s simply each of the women telling us a brief description of her life.

But the music is great!

My favorite least known play (not a musical) was … the name escapes me now. The story of a mathematician, quiet introspective story with only a few actors. Lesser known Broadway theater or just off Broadway. Was in NYC on a business trip 21-22 years ago, and made plans to see it after checking (before my trip) what was showing. The name escapes me at the moment.

EDIT: A little research indicates it was “Proof”. Apparently made into a movie that I never saw. And apparently it won a Tony for Best Play, so maybe it’s not as little known as I thought. :person_shrugging:t4:

Speaking of whom, I wouldn’t mind seeing an Encore version “Wildcat”. I seem to remember her belting out “Hey, Look Me Over” on someone’s show when I was a toddler. I think it was eclipsed by “Unsinkable Molly Brown” which mined the same material.

I loved “A New Brain” when I saw it at Lincoln Center Theater in the late '90s. Music and lyrics are by William Finn (probably best known for March of the Falsettos) with a book by Finn and Lapine. It starred Malcolm Gets who was best known for co-starring in the sitcom “Caroline in the City.” Reading the Wikipedia entry, I discovered that the cast included some of my favorite Broadway talent: Mary Testa, Kristin Chenoweth, and Chip Zien (the original Baker in Into the Woods). I’m sorry that I didn’t see the City Center Encores production in 2015 starring Jonathan Groff.

To make this more CC-relevant, William Finn is probably Williams College’s second-best-known musical theater professional. (Take that Wesleyan ;))

OMG. I mentioned seeing “Tick, Tick Boom…” performed live but totally forgot that D and I also saw it performed at City Center Encores in 2014. There are only 3 actors and the City Center show starred Lin-Manuel Mairanda, Leslie Odom Jr. (pre- Hamilton) and Karen Olivo.

Blood Brothers! It opened in London and played on Broadway for several years in the early 1990s. Fantastic! Never get tired of the original soundtrack.

Young Frankenstein, which had a brief stint on Broadway and included most of the cast of The Producers, was hysterical. I don’t remember the music, but I recall that we all found it genuinely fun.

@MWDadOf3 and @sevmom - if you haven’t seen it, there’s “The Goes Wrong Show” put on by the BBC which you can find via various streaming services; my S23 (a theater kid) and I watched it in 2021 and it was hysterically well done!

Gloria Estefan story “Get on your Feet” was such a surprise. Everyone in the audience loved it and jumped up for a standing ovation!
Also, “Kinky Boots” was outstanding. We just loved that show and went in with no expectations. We also saw Michelle Obama with her mother and daughters there… they seated them after the lights were down.

If y’all get a chance to see “Jagged Little Pill,” which has been touring since the pandemic shut it down on Broadway, do it! I’ve seen it twice, once on Broadway, once touring, and will see it again if it comes near me again. Maybe boomers wouldn’t enjoy it, but GenX/GenZ (me and my kids) adored it. It didn’t hurt that the album was the soundtrack of my life for a good portion of my misspent youth.

I took my daughter when she was about 8 years old. She loved it (me too). She said she wanted a Audrey II plant and I said 'What if she wanted to eat us?" Without missing a beat, my little ghoul said “I’d just ask her if she likes Chinese Food.”

Her sister is Chinese.

“The Last Five Years” . Not sure if this is more or less popular, as it was made into a movie version, but I don’t hear about it often. I enjoyed the music, and the chronological interplay.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical Just fantastic. I had her Tapestry album memorized.

Jagged Little Pills.
Have to say I didn’t like it. The three female leads were really great singers (mother, daughter, daughter’s friend) so that part of the show was good, but just too many problems in one family and not uplifting. Yup, I like my musicals light.

I’m a boomer but one in our group was a recent college grad and she didn’t like it either. Too dark.

OMG. Saw this in the 70s. One of my favorite plays. Totally forgot about it

Bright Star by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. I had the opportunity to see Otterbein’s production last season in a small black box theater setup as a thrust stage and it was such a treat. It was an immersive bluegrass experience.

Our local community theater just did Bright Star, it was really good, I didn’t like blue grass music but really did enjoy this musical.
