Lessons Learned During This Admissions Cycle

Very happy for you! You definitely had many more obstacles in your way than the usual kid, and yet you managed to overcome. Hard to do, absolutely. You most definitely deserved those acceptance letters, likely letters, and even the financial aid packages.

you’ve made my day. Bravo, well done. You’ve lit up a sophomore’s eyes.
I have to say, that parent support hurt me there. That is just appalling to me.

and @Ituneco or something, My parents have done the same thing, it seems my hard work ****es my family off.

Man, when I read that you couldn’t afford even test-prep book for that first ACT, I think my eyes started clouding up. All those jobs, struggling, and somehow APs, scores, and all…you’re still so humble it’s amazing.

And sure, those were your parents, but you seriously don’t need those losers. From what I just read they didn’t care, didn’t want you to climb higher than them (insecure creeps), and even seemed to resent you for the awesome future you will undoubtedly build.

I wanted to cry because this was so unlikely, eloquent, and courageous, but it was also so hopeful I needed to smile. You’re an amazing person: Enjoy Princeton, and who cares about Caltech anyway (jk lol)?

that’s awesome

I have also been lurking here for a while, being this my first post.
I have to say your post was very inspiring and so emotionally touching to me that at one point tears started flowing out of my eyes.
I live in a country in South America and most people here do not care about getting an education, my country’s economy is mainly supported by agriculture. In my country, not many people apply to universities in the U.S. and very few people understand what the SAT, Harvard or Princeton are. I study at a small private school in the capital of my country and in my school very few students are interested in their education. If people pass their exams its normally because of cheating and not because they studied for the exam. My classmates do not understand why I am putting so much effort on trying to get admission in a university in the U.S… They don’t get it. They don’t understand how I can bear studying more than the stuff from school. Your story is very inspiring and it is definitely an inspiration for me in my quest for admissions in universities of the U.S…

Thank you for posting this FortunaHope!

My old school had circumstances similar to yours. I wish I had stayed for the high school. I could have stood out so much more there - I could have skipped a few grades in math and science, probably. I think I would have liked it more as well. But instead, I chose to go to a normal regents-prep school because it sounded good. Honestly, it sucks. The teachers are awful and we don’t learn much. The teachers at my old school were so much better.

Thanks for the epiphany/inspiration.
