Let the Fundraising War Begin!!

Excerpts:

"University of Michigan is on the precipice of another large fundraising campaign, Vice President for Development Jerry May told a group of faculty members Monday.

U-M's last fundraising campaign "The Michigan Difference," which ended in 2008, raised $3.2 billion dollars over five years. The school raised $273 million in fiscal 2010-2011, an increase of 7 percent over the previous year.

"Knock, knock!!" Mr. Page, are you home?? :p

P.S. Personally, I think it's a great strategic move from Michigan's Development Office. I only wish MSU would start doing the same! After all, Mr. Eli Broad had already donated approx. $half-billion to both Harvard and MIT, in addition to UCLA, UCSF, Cal Tech & USC since he has been living in CA for the last few decades.

Not much of a war to be held - Harvard is slated to announce its fundraising campaign soon enough, and it’s rumored to be upwards of $10 billion. It’s definitely going to be at least $7 billion (can’t be one-upped by USC and Stanford, now can it?).

Just saw this list by ‘goldenboy8784’ from last month while I was away… lol

In short, based on the article, I think Michigan’s probably pegging its endowment against schools in the last column (particularly based on 'Endowment $‘s Per Student’).

Quote:

"Ohio State is 10th in fundraising nationally

A new national survey of public and private universities ranks The Ohio State University 10th among public universities in the United States for total private support based on a three-year average, up from 11th last year. Ohio State was also named the top university in Ohio for fundraising.

The Voluntary Support of Education (VSE) survey is conducted annually by the Council for Aid to Education (CAE), a national nonprofit organization that is the country’s sole source of empirical data on private giving to education. Overall, the VSE found that despite a challenging economic climate, charitable contributions to U.S. colleges and universities in 2011 grew by 8.2 percent, reaching $30.3 billion.

In fiscal year 2011, which ended June 30, philanthropy at Ohio State was marked by the following milestones:

* A record 177,322 donors gave an unprecedented $259 million to Ohio State

 • Total fundraising, including pledges and bequests, topped out at a record $407.6 million

 • Ohio State alumnus and former Board of Trustees Chair Leslie H. Wexner and the Limited Brands Foundation committed $100 million to the university, the largest gift in its history

 • The two-and-a-half-year Students First, Students Now fundraising initiative for student support concluded June 30 having surpassed its $100 million goal by $14 million

Although the school is in the middle of a successful $2.5 billion fundraising campaign - plus the $4.1 billion cash flow and $1.4 billion gift endowment on top of approx. $2.2 billion endowment and annual $500 million state appropriation, I am not certain if TOSU will be able to make the list by 2020 due to its large student body and astronomical future spending in order to make the Top-10 Public ranking. The school is currently making $1 billion revenue a year from the tuition and $2 billion revenue from the hospital operation. hmm…
