Letter of Rec Question

Do med schools accept letters of rec from employers?

I am trying to decide if keeping my semi-lucrative school-year job (which has nothing to do with medicine, but everything to do with taking up a bunch of time and being responsible) is worth it.

The letter of rec would be stellar. And be from someone who has some strong holdings at the university I go to. But again. It keeps me from doing more pre-med focused activities. And I'm not sure if med schools will ever even look at that letter of rec.

I think it depends on what your school does in terms of rec letters.

My school uses the committee/composite letter. I can request letters of recommendation from as many people as I want (6 offered, and I asked for 2 additional ones from non-traditional pre-med recommenders (a social worker and the director of student leadership)) which are then sent to the committee. The committee interviews me (September 2! Soon!), writes a composite letter, and staples all the other letters to it. Then the entire package is submitted to my schools and recorded as 1 letter (committee packet).

So! I have some ideas for you. 1) If your school works like mine, then definitely include the one from the employer, assuming you have other strong ones too (if not, perhaps focus on strengthening other relationships this semester) 2) If your school doesn’t, and you’ll be responsible for submitting 2 science letters and 1 other letter, then leave it out 3) If your school works like mine, but you don’t want the employer letter to go to each school, you have the option of sending the employer letter to certain schools on your list (which you choose/designate) but not all if you upload it separately from the committee letter on AMCAS (this is easy to do, and apparently pretty common).
