i'm going to apply to transfer to the university of miami for fall 2010. part of the application is a letter of recommendation from a professor or employer. i have worked at my current job for almost two years, so my boss knows me quite well... but that would say nothing of my academic ability. but i don't really have any professors that know me at all. exactly how well should you know a professor before you try to get a LOR from them? i haven't really bonded with any professor.

so would it be better to get one from my boss, or try to get to know one of my professors and ask them for one?

ask who ever you think will write a stronger letter for you.

well yeah that’s kind of a cop out, my employer can write a better letter, but it would be based on character alone here. and when it comes to my character, pardon my french, but will they really give two ****s? or do i need some academic recommendation?

Are you only allowed to submit 1, and will the LORs go through you or do they have to come from your professor/employer directly? They both have different perspectives that are equally valid, so if at all possible, ask both of them to write one, and you can always make the final call regarding which one to submit with your application. Your character, determination, and work ethic, both professionally and academically, are things that aren’t fully conveyed with your transcript or expanded resume. In my opinion, the committee probably does give two *****s about that, but in reality, I’m not sure how much weight they give to them or how much time they allot to review them.

Do you trust your boss? If you think he would write and explain that you are on time to work every day, go out of your way to take on projects and responsibilities, and treat other coworkers with respect, I think that will speak very highly of you.
