Letters from Colleges

Do letters from colleges mean anything? Do they just randomly send them out to get people interested, or do they really want you? Does getting a letter mean your chances are slightly higher too?

Schools get mailing lists from places like Collegeboard for students above certain psat or other test scores or other criteria and all students at "their mark" or above get the mail. It gets students to apply and most of the time helps the school raise their selectivity by rejecting more applicants. Marketing, marketing, marketing, marketing, marketing. You're chances aren't any higher than the kid down the street who never took the test and doesn't get the mail.
