I was considering to apply to MPS but never did for many reasons. The one thing that got me the most was the school buildings itself. At MPS, it feels like the buildings were scattered all over this town and to go from english to your dorm or your gym you have to walk a few blocks. hard to tell what was the school and what wasn't. overall, wierd and not worth going. I would highly suggest Emma Willard. I got accepted there but not going because i can't affort it and I'm going to Miss Hall's. Emma Willard feels so much like a community and has so many great traditions. It has a beautiful campus and great feel. great classes and great feedback, I used to be IN LOVE with it, like deep in love with the school and used to obsess over it but instead I am now obsessing over Miss Hall's. Hope to be of help, I visited emma twice.

Emmers44, thanks so much for sharing your views! What did you feel about the dorms? Do you think MPS has better dorms? I heard they were larger but I can't seem to find much difference other than the size. Personally, I prefer Emma too but I'm trying to let d make her own decision.

Emma's Hallways for the dorms are one of the largest of all boarding schools or so I have heard. very spacious for walking. as for the dorms themselves, they were just gorgeous. MPS dorms were probably bigger because they used houses for dorms (about 7 dorm rooms per house) but It did not really feel dorm-y...it felt more like just a regular run of the mill house that you share with some physcos. Emma's are gorgeous with the paneling and some rooms were very spacious. All of emma's dorms were on one floor entering up a beautiful staircase...there was just different halls. Every hall has a theme and a name as well. The names stick every year for hall's, it's been like this since founding...they have names like SageZoo and KellasLong and stuff, but the theme changes. A few themes I saw where Mario, and Disney Princesses. There is LOTS of dorm hall spirit as well. all the freshman are on one or two halls and the other grades are mixed on different hall's. It was very nice and you felt more like a student BODY. any more questions? i can keep talking about it for ages...by the way..did you visit either of these schools? oh and another way to get a feel for the school is going on youtube.com and in the search bar type in Emma Willard. I lived off these videos in the admission process.

Emmers44, your views are worth a million to me --- more so cause its coming from someone my d's age . THANK YOU SO MUCH! We had made a brief visit to Emma and had to cancel MPS the last minute cause of an unexpected emergency. Everything is kind of fuzzy for me as a result cause there were some other school visits prior to that. Thank you again and I do wish you all the best!

my friend devon was accepted to emma willard.. but she was rejected by taft.

was anyone accepted to emma with FA? If so, did emma give you your full financial need?

emmers44, I think you probably may have seen Miss Porter's Cottage dorm which is, indeed, very small with under 10 rooms. The majority of the dorms are much larger i.e. Brick, Ward, Lathrop, and New Place. There are also two connected dorms for seniors only. Keep is smaller than New Place and Lathrop but each room has its own private bathroom. I think all of the dorms have very generous closet space. Common rooms are well equipped and nice places to hang out with your dorm mates and friends.

I was accepted to Emma, however we were put on a wait list for Financial Aid which means I will not be able to attend. Its sort of sad, but MPS was my top choice anyway. kamaole, 1) what grade did your daughter apply for 2) i recommend pro-con lists for both the schools. they can be tedious, but they help a bunch when you're caught between two school.

Lookingformore, d applied for 10th grade and thank you for the suggestions! D has been making that list and hopefully she'll come to a conclusion soon. Thank you all!

i got accepted to emma with FA..quite generous. Does anyone know about Emma's top college choice of year 2007? I want to get into Columbia ..don't know if i can make it at Emma. Thus, i haven't made up my mind yet as i got waitlist at Middlesex(really love it!)....Any advice?

ntmngoc:
Try looking on the Emma Willard web site:
It took about 15 seconds to find the list of college matriculations for 2007
College and Universities attended by Emma graduates

Congrats on your acceptance.

^when you look at that, keep in mind that the class of 2007 was rather, uh.... not so motivated.

Well, Emma is an absolutely fabulous school and I don't appreciate that pretentious attitude of "I don't think I can get into Columbia there!"
You know what, you can get in to any college you want regardless of whether you attend Andover or public school.
I honestly don't think they care what the name of the school is, as long as you are a good applicant.
Boarding school don't make you, you make yourself.
Okay?
So if you really love Middlesex, then give getting off the waitlist your all and allow someone who really loves Emma Willard and has never questioned nor cared about their standing in the world of Academia to receive that "quite generous" FA grant.

Last year Columbia College had an acceptance rate of 8.9%, and this year it will probably be a little lower. SEAS is a little higher, but not by much. It would be unwise for you to go to any boarding school believing that it is a ticket to Columbia.

Thank you very much for your help...
I'm sorry if any of u feel mad about what i said...really... I'm just a bit confused ..since i am an international student, I don't know much about schools in the U.S as well as how colleges choose their students...

@especially jumpstartzoe: pretentious? I don't think so...I really mean it...I don't know...As I said above, I don't know which schools in the U.S is good and whether high school plays that much important role in getting college acceptance, as well as how college admission works....But thanks for your advice anyway!

ntmngoc -- What you said did not make me feel mad. I have no attachment to Emma Willard. However, I wanted you to know that admission to Columbia College is very difficult now. The good news is there are many quality colleges in the US. The college advising group of a good boarding school will work with you to make a good match.
