I agree, but do you think there is any relevance in receiving URM focused recruitment, or are they just trying to increase selectivity cough Wash U?

My daughter received a mailing from Columbia. Two booklets, one explaining their majors and what a wonderful learning experience they will have (DUH!), the other describing their need-blind financial aid. My daughter is ranked 9th in her class (Catholic HS in NYC) 3.9 GPA, but her test scores are nowhere near Ivy standards. We just looked at each other, shrugged, and just put it aside. We get so many mailings from colleges/universities, her head is swimming. This was just a surprise, an Ivy sending stuff? She knows her stats, and she even said she isn’t going to bother to apply.
But do schools of Yale and Columbia’s caliber send stuff to students that they somehow feel they might fit in? Or is it just a marketing ploy to have us apply?

I think that the schools pay for lists from the college board for the psat scores and the school may set certain score cut-offs plus maybe other self-reported data cut-offs. So it is a marketing ploy, but directed only to people with certain score cut-offs.
