I know the standard number of letters of recommendation is around 3 for most medical schools (2 science, 1 non-science) and they generally need to be from science professors, those you've done research with, etc., but is a letter from the pre-med department of your college necessary? If I don't receive one from the department, would that have any effect on my chances of getting into medical school (given that my grades and mcat score are up to par)?

premed department?

if you’re school has a committee letter, you will need to get that instead.

If your school offers a committee letter and you don’t have one, it can be seen as a sign that your school does not support your application. Like a vote of “no confidence” in your candidacy.

This, of course, assumes you are applying as college senior or very recent grad. (Within a year or two after graduation.) If you’ve been out of school for several years–committee letters are not expected.

The lack of committee letter is not the kiss of death, but it will raise some awkward questions and may reflect negatively on your application…
