Letters of Recommendation: Graduate School vs. Job

Hi guys! I’m finishing up my summer internship right now, and my boss has already offered to write me a letter of recommendation. I plan to get one from him and also one from another lady I worked under.

I’m heading into my senior year of college right now, and after graduation I currently plan to work for a year or two and then go to grad school. I would love to be able to use the letters of recommendation I get from my internship this summer both for the jobs I apply to in the coming year and in a year or two for graduate school. My question is, should I ask my boss to write two separate letters, one for jobs and one for graduate schools? I’m not sure if that’s uncommon or too much to ask for, but I feel like one might emphasize my skills and work ability while the other would emphasize my passion for the subject and willingness to learn, for example.

I think I would request one letter from each person. An employer can focus on work skills and a faculty member can write about academic skills. However, they are looking at different sides of the same of coin. Are you prompt in completing assignments, adhere to schedules, show initiative n learning more than what you need to know, a successful colleague and team member, take and give supervision, very good oral language and writing skills, work until the job is done and any number of other attributes. We are selves wherever we go. The focus and tasks change by place.

You’re reading too far into it. One strong letter is all that is needed.
