Can anyone tell me who can write the letters that go into the AFA application? I have been getting conflicting answers—some say anyone can write; others say it has to be science and math teachers; some say every academy is different. Does anyone know for sure? Thanks!

It looks like there will be recommendation forms for math, english and one other coming with the app package. You can see the list of forms on your status page at academy admissions website.

Wait for the forms.

Science teacher (either physics or chem), Math, and english

you need a graded essay from an english class also (I had problems finding this b/c I didn't know about it before hand)

There's another form that goes with the recommendation letter.

you can send in other rec letters from community service leaders, coaches or what not (I did) they prob won't look at them as much as they do with the 3 teachers but it won't hurt

Are there any specifics about whether the teacher(s) were in your soph, junior, or senior years? I have an English teacher who is also my coach and student gov sponsor thus great recommendation letter. However was my sophomore Eng teacher.
Also, my AP Environmental Science teacher is more involved with my e/c so again another great recommendation letter. Is the science specifically chem or physics?

If I remember correctly, the recommendation forms ask questions about your ability to do higher level work, so, in general, higher level teachers (senior vs. freshman) would be better. However, other factors could easily outweigh this factor.

e766, there may be a better time to ask the soph teacher/coach to write a recommendation letter and that is for the congressional nominations. The depth and breadth of this kind of relationship (teacher AND coach AND sponsor) might be great for this.

My son, now a Cadet 4C, spread his recommendation requests among several teachers because he knew they each took time. In his case, each Senator and the Congressman asked for a bit different focus in the letter of recommendation--it didn't turn out to be a "one letter fits all" situationl One Senator had specific questions that he wanted answered that were not the type of thing you would spontaneously mention in writing a standard letter of recommendation.

Read the packet carefully & Good Luck!

fm

It explains it in the application packet...just wait for it.

The recs are suppose to come from your junior and/or senior years. Chemistry or Physics, Math and English. The recs are actually specific forms that will be included in your application.

According to the forms I got today it's
