there's only 3 professors in my major's department. rest are associate professors or assistant professors. Would the higher the title be beneficial for an LOR or does it not matter?

The individual with which you had the best relationship with would be the one, whether it’s a research assistant or the dean of the college.

so you’re saying a well written LOR from a research assistant will be just as good as a well written LOR from the dean?

If the research assistant worked more closely with you and can write an extensive, detailed letter about your work while all the dean can say is “he got an A in my class,” then yes, the research assistant’s letter would be stronger. Titles aren’t everything.

My LoRs came from: the director of the J-school, attesting to my academics; the ag school’s science writer/adjunct j-prof, who supervised my research internship; the recreation partnership manager for Alaska Region USFS, who supervised my field internship.
