If your child gets into their ED school, how should the letters of withdrawal from the other colleges be worded? Should they write a simple two line note of "thanks but no thanks" or should they state that they are "planning to attend X college next fall so thank you anyway?" Should they send this letter snail mail, email or fax?

I think they should be sent both by fax and then snail-mail, keeping copies of what is sent. Because ED is kind of a contract, it is important to have records of the withdrawls.

The wording should be simple, such as: "I would like to inform you that I am withdrawing my application for admission, as 1... I have been accepted Early Decision from_____________ or 2. ...I have received an acceptance from my Early Decision school"). While schools do like to know where students will be attending, it is totally up to the individual as to whether or not to share this. And oh yeah, its nice to thank them for their consideration of your application.

When my D was accepted E.D. to her first choice, she had only one other app which had to have been sent because of an early deadline. She wrote to them stating that she'd been accepted to NYU and to please withdraw her app to CMU. She thanked them for their consideration and that was that. They requested it by snail mail. I'm not sure what other colleges prefer.

we've only got a couple to do, but Son will personalize them a little, since he met the reps and has e-mailed them over the past year or so.

My son send off snail-mail letters to each of his RD schools (he had sent in all the other apps), saying that he had been accepted ED (he didn't say where) and was withdrawing his application. Most schools sent back letters acknowledging the withdrawal - several asked where he was going. At one school where he had been in more extensive contact with an admissions rep, he sent off a personal letter to that rep too.

I have a cousin who when accepted in her ED school, the other 2 schools she had applied to RD, actually sent her application fee back. It was early that she heard (Nov) so maybe that was why the refund was given. I know this is highly unusual, but maybe it will happen again and plus you open a spot for another student who is seriously considering that school that you are withdrawing from.
