LGBTQ?

I have a student who I think would love Sewanee - it’s close enough to home and has the programs they are looking for - but they are LGBTQ and areligious. We found in researching that the college is associated with the Episcopals, and to my knowledge they’re a liberal bunch, but I told the student I’d do some poking and see what I could find about acceptance at Sewanee. Does anyone know how safe and accepted a trans, nonbinary, or gay student might feel there?

Their Pride Index is pretty low - 3/5

The student in question should open a CC account and ask for him/herself. Asking for others is not allowed on CC

I am a current freshman student at Sewanee. I am transferring in the spring because they are not as religious as I thought they were and I have not had a good experience with the school in general. The student body is very radical going as far as doxxing people who don’t believe the same things as they do.
As far as LGBT, I don’t think your student would have any problem fitting in there.

Thanks for the insight and I hope you find what you’re looking for. Can you comment on ethnic diversity in campus (specifically Asian)? Also can you provide more insight on the comment regarding docking if you don’t agree with their beliefs (religious, philosophical, etc)? Thanks. My child applied EA and has a VERY high opinion of school but doesn’t know anyone attending.

The ethnic diversity on campus is average in my opinion. The school has a lot of international students that they pride themselves on. I do have two Asian friends if that helps?

My main comment on doxxing is that, because it is such a small campus, word spreads fast. If something happens, or someone doesn’t like you, everyone will know. One student spread someone’s address around. There are numerous groupchat where students talk about other students. The student body is not very accepting of any belief that isn’t f a r left from my experience.

Just in general, I want to let you know what I wish I would have known before enrolling
because my experience has not been the best here. The dorms are disgusting and very run down (they will only tour you through the one nice dorm they have), my dorm had no AC and the bathrooms were only cleaned once a week, plus the proctors do not follow the rules. The technology is limited (we were being taught in literal tents in the parking lot), and the professors have not been great. I have had a big problem with my professors not being available for help outside of class. The school administration brushes over the huge drug, alcohol, and sexual assault problem. I was falling asleep to the smell of weed almost every night. Honestly, if your student isn’t into partying and drinking, they will have a hard time finding things to do. Because of covid, we arent allowed to leave campus and the school is suspending any student if they leave, even for necessities.
