OP: I highly recommend that you get your hands on a copy of the Fiske Guide. One of its best features is that if you find a college that grabs you, it cross-references you to similar schools.

From D1’s experience, most of her classes at USC are smaller than most of her high school classes(30-40). Only one or two classes that are rather large, for example the class about Steven Spielberg’s movies(365 max).

I’m not pushing Haverford, but I would not consider it isolated. Especially not compared to many other LACs (including Colgate). The walk to the Haverford train station takes about 10 minutes or less. From the station it’s about 15-20 minutes into central Philadelphia. The area immediately surrounding the campus is well-populated; shops, restaurants, etc. are not far away. ([Haverford College: Getting Here](http://www.haverford.edu/visiting/gettinghere.php))

If you want a truly urban (not suburban) LAC in the USNews top 30 or 50, or even the top 100, there just aren’t that many choices. There’s Colorado College (fairly cold, and Colorado Springs is not exactly Manhattan), Macalester (unbelievably cold), Trinity College (in Hartford, maybe not too attractive), and Barnard (for women only). For more choices you need to go outside the top 100 (Eugene Lang?), stretch your idea of “urban” (Goucher?), or stretch your definition of a “LAC” (Rice?) Though there are many great choices in large towns (Wesleyan) or suburbs (Reed etc. etc.)

In my earlier list, I forgot to suggest Trinity U.

It’s quite a good LAC (one of the few to offer engineering), located in San Antonio, and has a deadline of February 1.

I think Wesleyan would be really sweet.

I missed the Pitzer deadline.

OK so here they are… The rest of my apps to go. Truck on till the 15th.

Colgate
University of Oregon
Colorado College
Furman/Elon? (Philosophy/Psych?)
Northeastern (Free)
Occidental
SMU (Free, Sister went here, parents want me to apply)
University of San Diego
Wesleyan University

What do you think?

Wesleyan’s great, but unfortunately the deadline was 1/1.

ehh whatever!

dpc, I think your list still needs work. It’s unfocused and scattered; you’ve got in-state and out-of-state publics, selective LACs, large privates. I think you need to spend a little more time thinking about what you really want in a college. From there, it will be easier to put together a coherent list of schools that are a good fit for you.

I looked at many of the schools on your list, Colgate is the one that stands out as different from the others. Colgate is laid back, but it is also ridiculously preppy and rich with collars up more than down.

I just applied to Oxy and CC, and others I applied to that you might like are Carleton and Grinnell. Both are great for someone who is noncompetitive and loves to learn. Both supplements are short and both applications are free.

what happened to Oberlin?!

Think I should apply to Oberlin?

I’m still sort of confused, so my strategy is just to apply to all of those that seem like one’s I’d enjoy, and then once I hear back take it from there.

My list in front of me.
-University of Oregon
-Colorado College
-University of San Diego
-Colgate (Free)
-Emory (Parents idea)
-Oberlin
-Northeastern (Free)
-Occidental

I like that list but I still don’t see Oberlin when much of your list is based on the natural beauty surrounding you.

Not sure which of these you would actually like because of the location thing… but Colgate was my top choice (I got in Early Decision) and here were the other liberal arts schools that I was considering: Colby, Bates, Bucknell, Conn College, Trinity, and Richmond.

anyone else have any words of advice…

as I’ve said I want a fun social life with alot going on, and a semi traditional college experience. so intermural sports, possible greek life, and fun times.

Of the schools in post 72, I like Oregon, Colorado College, and USD the best.

Has anyone mentioned Carleton? Great school with great and quirky intramural sports. Ultimate Frisbee capital of the world. Free application fee and 15th Jan deadline.

We can keep this going, but I do hope dpc has started his/her applications by now :)

I assume he already completed his common app. I think Carleton does not have any special essay or supplement, so it should be quite simple. Just a suggestion.
