liberal arts with music production/technology

What are some academically rigorous liberal arts schools (not necessarily LACs) that offer programs (not necessarily majors) in music production or music technology? Ideally they’d also be small and have a liberal-leaning student body.

The only ones I’ve been able to find are Brown and Oberlin.

American U. Peabody at JHU, but that’s a conservatory.

Another suggestion is to concentrate your search on cities with thriving music production scenes: Atlanta, NYC, LA, Nashville, Chicago, et al.

Would the [BM in Sound Recording Technology](School of Music, Theatre, and Dance | Ithaca College) offered by Ithaca College fit what you’re looking for?

You’re looking for a very particular thing, This can be found at well-known places like Dartmouth or not-as-well-known places like Butler. Using the College Confidential Super Match tool (http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_search/) and other resources, you’ll have to seriously look into this on your own.

Check out the Sound Recording Technology program at Ithaca College.

I was going to suggest Ithaca College, but looks like others beat me to it! Throwing in my vote for IC.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Do you guys know if the program at Ithaca College allows you much time to study other things? I don’t just want to study music technology since there are so many things I’m interested in and I want to leave my options open. I like the sound of a BA program where you can specialize or at least do a lot of work in music tech, but a BS might be too much of a commitment for me. How does it work at Ithaca?

The Sound Recording Technology program at Ithaca College is a specialized major in the music school culminating in a bachelor of music degree. The degree requirements appear to be extensive, allowing only about one quarter of the coursework to be completed outside the music school.

According to the IC website, the music school also offers music minors.

I do not see specific information about whether a music minor could focus on sound recording technology courses. You should ask. The first course in the program, MUMC 10300 “Introduction to Music Technology,” is open to music school students and to others by consent of the instructor.

The only way you will find out is to ask the IC music school.
