do barnard/columbia students typically join a NY public library on top of having access to barnard/columbia libraries?

Not sure about "typical", but my d has not used the NY library, as far as I am aware. There is a branch fairly close by on Broadway, I seem to recall, though.

i google-mapped NYPL locations, and the closest ones that came up were 125th/amsterdam and 115th/7th. i was hoping for one on broadway, but i didn't see one. both of those are a little out of my comfort zone, but i'm thinking that not all of the locations came up on the map. i tried the NYPL website, but the page for branches didn't load. it's just that i'm a big fan of libraries as opposed to buying books (books for leisure that is).

A lot of my friends have NYPL library cards. There's a library extremely close by on Broadway at 113th. I've used the public library for both pleasure and research.

P.S. Just as a little tidbit of information, CU/BC students also have access to NYU's library. I don't believe you can take books out, but you can do research there.

My friend (a rising sophomore at NYIT) strongly suggested getting a library card. Even if you don't use it for books, you can always check out DVDs for free. Talk about cheap entertainment!
