Life at Colby

What are weekends as a student like at Colby what is there available to do in Maine on the weekends or during time off?

Hi! I’m a current student at Colby. On weekends there’ll usually be a wide variety of activities going on. Like any college, there will be drinking going on, and that’ll mostly be centered on Friday and Saturday nights. Our office of Campus Life also does a really good job having events for students on weekends. Usually there’s some form of late night snacks, a movie screening, and other activities. We’ll also have different speakers and guests on campus that’ll have speeches as well.

Sometimes my friends and I will go off campus as well on the weekends. The Waterville-Colby relationship is definitely developing more and more every year and there’ll be different events going on in Waterville (which is about 5 minutes down the road by car). Parking is free so a lot of students have cars and we have a Jitney which shuttles students throughout Waterville from 2pm to midnight.

Farther than Waterville, there’s Augusta, which has the Chipotle and Panera that many go to. There’s also some nice things to do by the riverside. Then there’s Portland, which is a much bigger city and a very vibrant city. That’s about an hour away and a good number of students go every weekend. Obviously in the wintertime there’s a lot of skiing going on, so there’ll be tons of cars driving up to the Loaf (Sugarloaf). And in the summer, if you’re on campus doing research or other things, there’s a reason why Maine is called Vacationland. There’s tons to do, whether you want to go to Baxter for a hike or Acadia to go sightseeing or go down to Five Islands / Bath area for some lobsters.

Hope this helps.

Hi there! I am a current first-year Colby student. In terms of parties, there are typically plenty of options on Friday and Saturday nights, usually beginning in individual dorm rooms and then moving to the Alfond Apartments as the night progresses. That said, many students choose not to party on weekends and pursue other forms of entertainment. Colby does a great job of hosting many events throughout the weekend including dances, movie nights, lots of free food opportunities, and guest speakers etc. There are other fun options off-campus including the movie theater in Waterville, shopping in Waterville, Augusta, Portland, and Freeport, and a ton of restaurants in the area. Downtown Waterville is a quaint area with great restaurants and bars that often give discounts to Colby students. It is easy to get around if you or one of your friends has a car, but it’s also convenient to use the Jitney, the student run shuttle service. In addition, many students choose to venture into the outdoors on weekends through Colby Outing Club trips or by arranging impromptu trips to Sugarloaf. There really is something for everyone to do on the weekends at Colby, and if chilling in your dorm room or going to the library on weekend nights is your thing, students do that as well. Most Colby students, including myself personally, strike some sort of balance on weekends among studying, going to parties, attending school-sanctioned events, checking out Waterville spots, and just relaxing. Students at Colby spend their weekends in a variety of different ways, and there is never pressure to pursue a specific activity on weekends; everyone does their own thing. Hope this was helpful!
