life at MIT

what is a typical week like for a MIT freshman?

My weeks aren’t very standardized. So how about I tell you about last week?

Sunday - Chilled? Don’t remember.
Monday - Went to classes. Went across the river to visit a friend '07 because she goes with a group to do poi (a type of juggling) and invited me. Was my first time and lots of fun. I’m remarkably good for a beginner, apparently
Tuesday - After classes, went to a UROP interview. I think it went well, but haven’t heard back yet.
Wednesday - Classes. Hopefully did well on a music exam. After that, I again crossed the river to meet up with Mollie '06, actually. She showed me cool mouse surgeries!
Thursday - Slept in so hard. I was up late Wednesday tooling on things that I should’ve done more of…
Friday - Classes. Went to a good Chinese place with some hallmates for dinner, then headed to an independent living group for board games/cookies&milk. (I’m close to a lot of people in this group.)
Saturday - More chilling on hall. Joked around a lot with hallmates. Tried to sleep so I could get up at 5am to catch a flight. Failed miserably at sleeping :D

Sometimes I have community service group meetings, I’ve gone to a SIPB meeting (does lots of programming for the student community’s benefit). I’ve spent a Saturday trimming trees for community service or helped with ESP (Educational Studies Program - we have fun events where MIT students teach college students whatever they want, from juggling to matrices to how to build a Rubik’s Cube). I occasionally go to the market.

Don’t know how typical this is…I have class every day until 5 (but my earliest class is at 10 twice a week, 11:30 once a week, and 2 twice a week)

Monday: UROP, class, relax, desk, 8.02 pset
Tuesday: Class, UROP, class, finish up pset (due at 9), relax
Wednesday: 6.01 lab, class, 18.03 pset
Thursday: UROP lab meeting, class, 18.03 pset, finish up 6.01 from the previous week
Friday: 6.01 lab, class, desk, go out
Saturday: sleep in, Pourhouse, desk, relax / go out / whatever
Sunday: SAT tutoring, desk, 8.02 pset

Pretty standard. Relaxing is usually with my hallmates watching TV or hanging out in someone’s room, going out is usually to a party in my dorm or to a party in my friend’s neighboring dorm, psetting is usually done either with my hallmates or down a few floors on my friend’s hall. It varies from week to week depending on what’s due.

My son’s typical week includes:
five days a week of classes, about 3-5 hrs/day; studying/P-sets
MITSO (symphony) practice a couple nights a week
sees new girlfriend a couple nights a week (speaks to her constantly) and on weekends
fraternity visits 2-3 times a week
piano lessons weekly
at least half a weekend of down-time
