Life expenses at UCR

<p>Hello everyone,
I have a chance to be an exchange student at UCR. I am worried about financials. I do not want to exceed $1000 per month. I won't be paying tuition, but I am expected to supply housing expenses.</p>

<p>Do you think I can manage to live in Riverside and not spend more than $1100 per month? (Including eating and housing)</p>

<p>It is OK for me to share a room off campus, or live in a dorm. </p>

<p>How would you comment on eating expenses? What are prices of fast food etc?</p>

<p>I am not much of a social person, I would plan to focus on studies even I could manage to come. I want to study at UCR, but my financial limits are very strict.</p>

<p>I am in serious need of those information, any suggestion and information is welcome. I posted similar message before, but now I send again to get more info.</p>

<p>I don’t suggest dorming or the International Village at all! The cheapest dorm is about $1100 a month. I’m sure you still want money for food and personal items. If you share an apartment with at least one other person in an apartment then you should be fine. Falkirk or Oban (formerly Summer Ridge) apartments rents with one other person is $350 max. By yourself would be $700-750. Falkirk and Oban does include a meal plan to ease food costs. You get it with the apartment. </p>

<p>If you go on University Ave. then you’ll run into the University Village, which is a shopping center that’s like 4 blocks long. There are plenty of fast food restaurants like McDonalds, Carl’s Jr. and a Denny’s and Shakeys just down the street from the apartments (or across the street if you live on University.) There’s also Pho and a cafe. On University and Chicago there is a Food for Less for groceries and a Dollar Tree. Also, the nearest Walmart and Target and 99cent store is 15 minutes on the bus. University and Chicago is 5-15 minutes away walking depending on how far you go and 2-5 on the bus. (The RTA bus for free as a UCR student.)</p>

<p>hope this isn’t too late, but yes $1000 is very doable. the cheapest on campus apartment runs for about $300. if you spend wisely on food and misc expenses you can do it. However, on campus apartments are unfurnished, and you’ll need money for books. furniture and books might hurt you.</p>

<p>You basically have three options (correct me if I’m wrong):

  1. Living in a house. That would probably be your cheapest option. Rent could vary from $400-$600 (not including utilities). Craigslist would be your friend for this option.
  2. Living in an off-campus apartment. (IE: Sterling, Grandmarc, etc) If you’re willing to split a room with someone, I think it would be about $400-$500. If you want your own room… then it could cost anywhere from $800-$1000. If you don’t have a car, then this is probably your best option. It is definitely walking distance to the main campus.
  3. Living in an on-campus dorm. (IE: AI, Pentland, etc) It’s probably the MOST expensive option. I lived in East Lo… for about $1000 a month, BUT I had to split the room with someone else. Food is included though.</p>

<p>I’m not really sure about the pricing of apartments anymore… but you could always look it up.</p>
