For people who attend Colgate/have children attending/just know a lot about the school...

What kind of activities does Colgate have On Campus that most people seem to take part in at different times during the year?

What kind of things do people do Off Campus?

Or at least, are there enough things to do so that you will be able to have a relatively active life?

How much money would you say you spend each week {personal expenses}?

Most people are involved in various ECs but by sophomore year most people are pretty much absorbed in Greek Life and/or athletics. There's not much to do off campus, so most people drink and go to the Jug (seedy bar) even though pretty much everyone complains about how bad it is. I probably spend about $40 a week, but if you stick with what Colgate offers for free, which is pretty much everything, you can get away with spending nothing in any given week.

Amen to the last line :) I don't drink so I'm not plopping down $40 a week to get drunk. I rarely spend any money on anything except for laundry, my sorority, and personal stuff. I think I go about $100/semester NOT including Greek activities. Pretty amazing compared to $500 at other schools... sheesh.

True.... I think by sophomore year, it's really down to athletics, your hard core EC, or Greek life. There isn't really much to do off campus but people could make a few hour trip to Syracuse or any of the cute nearby towns like Cazenovia or Norwich. But there is just so much to do on campus that things are pretty much taken care of for you when you're looking for things to do when you need a study break.

Colgate is really about making personal connections and getting to know other people.

Would you say that drinking is an enormous part of Colgate's social life? Like, if I don't drink would I probably not have very many friends because most people spend their nights drinking?

I was waitlisted...but if I get in, I'm going...I have the same concern as rachel212.

seems many on CC dont drink.. count me in...

I'm not a drinker (don't have the acquired taste) and I do just fine. People really use alochol here just for pleasure but they don't go as far to getting themselves drunk on purpose. That becomes more prevelant in the upperclassmen whereas the freshmen don't know their limits.

There's a resaon why there are so many activities on campus.

wow i thought id be the only one who wasnt going to touch alcohol at colgate. evidently i will have some friends!

this might be a stupid question but does the school or campus authority try to do anything to prevent drinking or chastise students for underage drinking?
