Lifestyle at Notre Dame

What’s the weather generally like at the university of Notre Dame? I was accepted but just applied without taking into consideration the lifestyle and I wanted to know how harsh the winters would be, how hot the summers are, and the humidity levels. Thank you!

You’ve definitely got four seasons. The late summer/fall when you’ll arrive can be nice to fairly hot. Not desert conditions, but definitely not heat to be taken lightly. Fans for non-AC dorms is a MUST. It can be a pretty dry heat. Fall into early winter can be cool on mornings, and is generally fair weather.
Winters though can be absolutely brutal. This winter was not; any snowfall was less than a foot and didn’t survive more than a week. I think we had maybe three weeks of single digit temps every day. Since early Feb. it has been one of the mildest winters I’ve experienced (coming from a Boston native). But this year is a definite outlier. Since we’re a private school, we don’t close when the town does like a public school. So we joke that it has to be -43 windchill with 10 feet of snow to cancel classes. I’m pretty sure that last year they only closed for a few days because Indiana was in a state of emergency. So that is something to take into consideration. I’m sure it was a different transition for Floridians and those from SoCal and Hawaii than it was for fellow New Englanders. Humidity is pretty average for the region and temps we reach. Just bring lots of layers and you’ll be fine!

Football Football Football Football Basketball.

A combination of the previous two posts, but I did hear that next winter will be one of the worst that we’ve had in a while. I’m in the Chicago suburbs, not South Bend. It’s like a rich, preppy, Catholic school. A lot of my classmates go there because it’s like my rich, preppy, Catholic high school

@feartheENGR Thank you! Also, do you think the weather would be drastically different for someone like me, from New York.

@reppincollege2 Probably not. Depends on how cold it gets there. Upper NY shouldn’t be a problem. Really it’s just temperature and wind which get to people. You’ll hear about the South Quad wind tunnel

Really, are you picking a college based on the weather? There are colleges in the South and California, where you might feel more comfortable.
