Likely Letter for Women in Engineering? (I'm a Guy?)

Sha, yes my D attended the open house. But we are kind of local. I don’t believe they will then decide to turn you down just because you cannot attend this event, especially you are in MD.

I was there with my D last year. Cal has been wanting to boost their female engineering population for years and this is an effort to showcase their effort by having female professors and current students and alumni members talk about their Cal engineering experience so prospective female students feel they are getting the attention of an environment that’s especially friendly to them. This is Cal trying to make sure their best candidates consider Cal as their #1 choice. So it’s a good thing for you who receive this letter.

Maybe CoE has found out that if they boost the female population it can’t be bad for the guys either so you guys also receive this letter…

for the OOSer – another factor may be at work. California has a huge state deficit and the UCs are certainly feeling it and they may be offering a larger than usual percentage admissions to the qualified OOSers simply because they can collect more tuition. Bad for California residents but good for you if you can afford the tuition.

If you can’t make the event, you should email the person back and tell them you can’t make it and why. You don’t necessarily have to do it, but this was what I did (I’m from Socal) because I thought it would reflect better on me as an applicant and a prospective student if I gave a polite reply. I’m sure it may not have been such a big deal, but I still didn’t want to appear impolite and apathetic.

I got this same e-mail and I’m a guy too. So it must not be an accident…

Did everyone who applied under the Engineering school get this, or are we really a select few of applicants who are “highly competitive”?

Should we go, despite the fact that it is for women?? lol

i got the same thing. i’m from texas.

any response from dennis lieu?
