Knitswim - did you also get into MIT? I thought I saw your name only for Chicago.

I did get into MIT, I didn’t post about it here besides putting it in the other schools accepted/rejected section of my Chicago results thread.

I just got a likely letter from Harvard.
Over the moon, I’m a Brit.

Congrats! I’m certainly not expecting one, and I’m aware that the vast majority of accepted students don’t get them, but did you get a phone call beforehand?

*I’m not suggesting being British effects your chances, the two aren’t linked.

No phone call!

I certainly wasn’t expecting one. They tend to give them if they think they NEED to sell Harvard to you. I’m applying from a prestigious community program by the Fulbright Commission, and they knew I was Princeton EA, and because they loved my application they knew they needed to send something like a letter.

For most admits they don’t think “we need to send this person a letter” so no-one should worry about it.

Thanks so much for your answer. Congratulations again, and best of luck with the rest of your college admissions!

comment removed.

@NickBonstow CONGRATULATIONS!!!
How did they know you applied to Princeton EA?

I was applying from a very prestigious community program in the UK (from the Fulbright Commission) and they pretty much knew that if you didn’t EA Harvard, you were EA at Yale or Stanford or Princeton.

Wow! Good for you!
I’m actually so happy for anyone who gets one because I am 99.999999999999% sure that I won’t get one (a single ray of hope)
You must have achieved so much, you really deserve it.

If you look that guy up on LinkedIn, he’s such an amazing individual :OOO Congratz!

Aww! Thanks, I really appreciate it. Getting into H. was NOT close to easy, no matter how big your CV. Many, many bumps in the road! I hope your college search goes very successfully.

^^mildly creepy, but I couldn’t resist…

And after reading the CV, I must say: well earned!

I know three people who’ve gotten likely letters from Harvard. One was asian, and got his letter just after winning Intel STS. The other two were URM. I think it’s fairly clear that “minority letters” do exist.

If such a thing does exist, it’s probs for high statted, privileged URMs.

Yup.

^knitswim on this thread is AA URM, fits the high stat profile.

Minority letters don’t exist. Likely letters that URMs happen to receive do exist.

Letters are issued for those that H deems will be most highly courted by other colleges/scholarships. Sometimes, that means ridiculously high stat URMs. It’s a marketing decision. I wouldn’t say a “minority” LL exists – the pool that H decides to target share one feature: they’re outstanding and H doesn’t want to lose them.

I interviewed one lady who had already been issued a Harvard Likely Letter. She ended up getting a Rhodes later on. Obviously, H targeted the right person.

Her being a URM seems rather coincidental in this light.

"Sometimes, that means ridiculously high stat URMs. It’s a marketing decision. "

The same ones get likelies from all the top schools. :p

Yup. My particular subject had a LL from two of the HYP colleges.
