Linguistics and...?

After a long search for a major that I want to do, I've selected linguistics. I myself want to pair it off with either history (either Roman or European), SPanish, or Korean (to get in touch with my roots). Now, I wasn't sure if I wanted to double major, or minor, so I asked my mom. She suggested that I may want to minor in something from left-field, so just incase my humanities background doesn't exactly put me on the right track.

I mean, I'm not bad at math or science at all. Actually, i might be better at those subjects - it's just that humanities hold my interest more. Over the summer, if things go as planned, I'll take a microeconomics course at JHU, and I can see how I like it. I don't think I'd completely suck or be bored to death by economics. Bio also seems like it might be fun, but I'll only be able to see after AP Bio next year. Actually, a cio minor might actually complement linguistics.

Well, here's the big Q: should I choose something that complements linguistics or something from left-field as a plan-b?

I don't know if a minor in any field would help you find a job if linguistics doesn't work out. If you decide to go to grad school in that field and get a degree then that would most likely work out fine. I'm thinking of double majoring in Linguistics and Physics, its sort of the same reason as you but I'm really interested in Physics as well as Linguistics so its not really a plan B sort of thing.

A complement for your Linguistics major would be nice if you know specifically what you want to study in linguistics, for example, if you wanted to focus your linguistics career on Korean.

Heh, I'm a lot like you. Linguistics = <33, but I know it might not be the best for a job, so I'm also majoring in psychology. I'd say choose something that you like and that would also help career-wise. At any rate, linguists do find jobs -- there's a lot of opportunity.

If I double major, I probably wouldn't ahve any time to have a minor, right? T_T So much information, and so little time (or sanity).

I think I might double major in history (because historical linguistics seems reallyy fun), specifically European history. Actually, before I considered linguistics, I wanted to be a Romance Studies major, but the literature requirements turned me off. And if I have any elective classes, I could dabble in Korean, Japanese, Spanish, ASL, so I don't lose what I know. But if I double major in EUro hist. knowing Fnrech, and even German and Russian, seem like a great asset. But I won't have time to do it all! Okay, now I'm just ranting.

I repeat: so much to learn, but so little sanity to spread around.

EDIT: I actually don't mind teaching if I can't find any other jobs as a linguist. My mom just doesn't thinkit'll rake in the dough. Who could blame her for wanting that? She came to America chasing the American dream and has been disappointed thus far. She said the only good things about coming to America (with my father) was getting three great sons. <3 Okay, I stop now. ^^;;
