I'm a junior planning on majoring in linguistics. I visited Penn a couple weeks ago and fell in love haha. I've been trying to find some info about the linguistics department there, but has been difficult since the website isn't very helpful... Does anyone know anything about it or have any advice, such as the quality and rigor of classes or professors? I know linguistics isn't exactly a popular major, but any information would be appreciated :)

Also, I was wondering if attempting to contact linguistics professors to ask to visit the department during a visit would help my chances at being accepted at all? Or if they would even let me visit haha

Penn’s Linguistics Department has long been ranked among the top 5 or 10 in the nation, and is the oldest modern linguistics department in the nation. In fact, Noam Chomsky of MIT, one of the most prominent linguists of the past half century, earned all three of his degrees at Penn.

Beyond that, I have no specific information about the department, but it probably wouldn’t hurt to contact the department office and ask them to let you speak to someone about the program. At the very least, they could put you in touch with an undergraduate linguistics major, if not a grad student or a professor.

And you’ve thoroughly explored the Linguistics Department web site? It seems to contain a lot of useful information:
