Hello! I'm interested in attending Haverford and possibly majoring in linguistics at Swarthmore. Does anyone have any insight into this process? For example, do you ultimately receive your Linguistics degree from Haverford or Swarthmore? And can you take a Linguistics Honor Major at Swarthmore if you are a Haverford student? Thank you!

Your degree is from the school you attend not the place that offers the major. The home school is accepting those classes, but you would graduate from home school (in this case Haverford).

Curious why you would want to do this? Although it’s very easy to major at BMC from HC, doing it at Swat is more of a challenge given the distance and the Tri-co van doesn’t run as regularly as the Blue Bus. In terms of dynamics, think of the Tri-co as an isosceles triangle with Bi-co being on one end of the triangle and Swat a distant point away.

It’s possible though. Intro level classes are available in the Bi-Co. You’d likely want to spend junior year abroad as a Linguistics major and then you’d only need to venture over to Swat for the upper level classes which likely don’t meet daily or even MWF. A car senior year would be helpful to have… and last time I checked, HC lets upperclass men/women keep cars on campus. This may change though with the new dorm being build over one of the parking lots.

I’ve met only a few HC linguistics majors over the years. They didn’t decide on linguistics though until after they came to HC. In some respects, the campus cultures of the schools are similar and if there is a very good chance you’d major in this field, I think it makes more sense to apply directly to Swat… unless of course there’s something that really resonates with you about HC that isn’t present at Swat.

Not any more. The Blue Bus now runs as frequently as the Tri-Co Van: once an hour.

Though I totally agree with HC Alum that it might make much more sense to attend a college that offers your major.

Hey, what happened? Did this just happen this semester?!

The schedule still reports it leaving twice an hour?

[Blue Bus (Bi-Co) - Bryn Mawr College Transportation](http://www.brynmawr.edu/transportation/bico.shtml)

never mind…
it leaves twice an hour only MWF peak times now and every 45 minutes TTh peak

I am glad to see that they added trips during peak times!!! When the transportation department announced the new schedule over winter break, there was at most one trip per hour. Poor Steve Green might have had to put up with a lot of angry mail from disgruntled students whose schedules became unmanageable…

Thanks for the info! I decided to apply to Haverford because when I visited, I really fell in love with the school atmosphere. I don’t know if it’s the honor code or something else, but the students there seemed incredibly mature, friendly, and laid back. Swarthmore was also great, but I just didn’t connect with it in the same way. Also, I’m not 100% sure I’ll go into linguistics, since I’m also very interested in comparative literature. I guess I’m saying that I thought it would be worth the extra effort in terms of linguistics to be able to go to Haverford

One thing that does help: Swarthmore’s Linguistics department schedules ALL of its courses (although not the cross-listed ones taught by professors in other departments) on TTH unless it’s a weekly seminar. I thought this was just a weird anomaly until I realized that it was for the benefit of Bi-Co students.
