Linguistics @ Yale

After doing a search of linguistics, I found some positive comments about Yale's ling program. But I'm a little confused because of the NRC ranking in ling:

1 MIT 4.79
2 Stanford 4.59
3 UCLA 4.56
4 Massachusetts 4.44
5 Penn 4.16
6 Chicago 3.97
7 Cal Berkeley 3.97
8 Ohio State 3.80
9 Cornell 3.78
10 Cal Santa Cruz 3.66
...
30 Yale 2.57

I know that this is a grad ranking and that it's over 10 years old, but still. Why would Yale be ranked so low? Can anyone give me more insight into their (current) program?

Also, does anyone know of ling program rankings? That'd be very much appreciated.

Thanks =)

I know this doesn't have the depth you're looking for, but a friend of mine is majoring in linguistics and seems to love it, and seems to be getting a lot out of it, and is always trying to get others to take classes in the program. The general rule is don't worry too much about grad school ratings for undergrad - you'll likely be taking a diverse array of classes, and you likely aren't going to end up doing groundbreaking research (though there certainly are research opportunities) as an undergrad, so the upper limits of the program doesn't matter as much. I'd visit and sit in on a few classes if I were you!

Best,
DMW

Thanks. I would if it weren't thousands of miles away. I think I'm just gonna do some major digging and exploring to see how the program is.

I've wondered the same thing, which is complicated by the fact that my other top choice is #2 Stanford. Could it have to do with the fact that Yale's department is very small compared to the others?
